Gymnopilus or Pholiota?
    #27052012 - 11/22/20 11:26 AM (3 years, 2 months ago)

Alright, so below I have a collection of photos that I've taken over the course of this past Summer... I still cannot tell the difference between gymnopilus sp and pholiota sp!!! If anyone can help tell me what I've got here and how to tell apart gyms and pholiota I'd be very grateful.

Habitat:
Northern WI. Found growing on decaying wood. Pictures below are taken from early June all the way to mid October.

Wasn't able to get spore print of any/many but would say print color ranged from rusty orange to brown.

ill bump this as I've still no idea..

My best guess is the larger caps w/ thicker stems are gyms and the thinner stemmed/smaller caps are pholiota. ? hmm

Here's some posts where i was having difficiulty with the two genera. Might be helpful. That reddish bruising might indicate Pholiota sp.

No - spores and gills aren't orange enough for Gymnopilus.

It's either Pholiota or Flammula.

Thanks Alan, I'll be sure to pay attention to gills/spores more often when comparing. That does help a lot thank you!
