Can my jars be saved?
    #27050845 - 11/21/20 07:50 PM (1 month, 23 days ago)

'Nocced up some pf tek jars 3.5 months ago.

The jars never fully colonized, and some of the jars have grown full shroom bodies and/or have lots of pins. Other jars seem to have some contam, some have flies inside (...how? I covered holes with micropore tape...lol), and others seem fine just stalled in the colonization process.

The other thing I noticed was the substrate seemed to shrink and change color below the BRF top layer, and even started to crack. I'm guessing this could be because of the heat when I first started this grow in August...

Anyways. Not sure what to do with these obviously failed jars. My instincts are telling me to trim off the full fruiting bodies that grew within jars, then brush remaining substrate off the mycelium and put all the spoils in a pot outside (in soil? or?) to hopefully grow something. Are these even safe to consume anymore??

I think it's safe to say I have no idea what I'm doing anymore, but I feel bad for my neglected and failed jars and want to save them if at all possible. Any advice or input is welcome and very appreciated!

I'm having a similar issue because I didn't use a pc. I took an apparently clean piece of mycelium and did a grain to grain spawn, so far so good.

Birth the jar and check the fruits for firmness.

Gnats can get into just about anything, which is why a 1/2inch to 3/4inch layer of pro-grade verm is use on top of the sub mix.

You don't need a PC for jars.  2hrs with the boiling pot method works fine.

If it isn't myc throw it out.

What am I looking for in regards to "firmness"?

The new plan: plant outside any obviously contaminated jars, and put the "good" cakes in a humidity chamber.

Flower pot tek is awesome but it works best when you have a very high natural humidity. Fill the pot with something like 5050 manure and verm straight out of the bag

Do you know if I can just grab some horse manure from my friend's pasture and mix that shit right in? Or do I need some extra special store-bought shit (Black Kow, etc.)

Wasn't finding much info on outdoor teks...I'm guessing I can just get a pot or dig a hole, throw in some 50/50 horse shit and verm (maybe with some gypsum to spice things up), crumble up the healthy cakes and throw them on top, and then cover with a thin layer of the 50/50. That sound about right?

You don't need manure at all. You can just use coir. Manure and gypsum is not necessary.

I view burying as a last resort that probably wont work. Flower pots are great if your current climate/season is warm and humid. For flower pots, there's no special prep like pasteurizing. You can probably use your friends manure however if it is not field aged it may smell like shit
