Do I really need food grade lye?
    #27051153 - 11/21/20 08:56 PM (3 years, 2 months ago)

Really? The lye I bought last time is no longer available on Amazon canada. Can I just use lye made for drain cleaning? Is food grade important?

Yeah you can use it as long as it's pure sodium hydroxide. Makes good soap, and cheap.

I agree with concrete ^ BUT. Just taking a jar of "lye" off the shelf at your local hardware store and thinking it is 'pure', even if not 'food grade' is a bad idea. 'Off -the-shelf' lye often contains dyes and other junk you don't want. I would think that digging deeper on the web (even just Ebay ?) may be a better move than using what you can find locally w/o knowing for sure. Look for companies that sell soap making supplies. Soap peeps always are concerned with purity.

I wouldn't use anything other than food grade lye. Who knows what other chemicals could be in there. I guess if it's truly pure it would be ok but look at the ingredients for sure
