Swabbing vs printing
    #27050999 - 11/21/20 07:02 PM (3 years, 2 months ago)

I mostly work with clones but would like to start experimenting with new genetics. It would seem to be that swabbing would be easier than making prints but prints seem to be more popular. Any downsides to using swabs instead? Also, will I get a variety of different genetics collecting from a clone? I can’t imagine why I wouldn’t. Then again, I also don’t understand how I’d get a variety of genetics from a mushroom that should just have one set of genes. But that’s probably just due to my lack of understanding how mushroom reproduction works.

Prints have way more uses in them. With a swab you kinda have to use it all unless you slice pieces of cotton off. With a loop and a print you could streak like 100 plates over a couple years no problem.

That’s the thing tho. I’m not looking to streak 100 plates over a couple years. I’ve got a couple lines I’m quite happy with but I also want to keep a couple tubs reserved to try out new genetics.

Ok so swab then.

You asked what the downside to swabs is, that’s the big one ime.

As far as the genetics stuff spores are pretty much the same whether from a clone or not.
