I never subscribed to the AA stuff. I am over two* years sober but yeah, probably irreparable damage done. I bought myself an AA necklace just to remind myself not to drink. That, and my disgust of alcohol due to the last time I had it, I didn't even get drunk and got the shittiest hangover ever. So I stopped after that lol

*Edit: damn late on editing my spelling error. Sorry everyone

Anonymous #22, Hang in there, don't let it bother you so much that people can see your pain, it's ok. There are strangers ut there whom actually care about you as a person, many of us have been where you are, you can beat this and suicide is not the answer. PM me if you want to talk or vent 🙂

Just bumping to say, it's a great day to be sober! I never thought I'd ever say that and honestly mean it.

I quit for like the 100th time Nov 12th.

9 days sober!

Craig Ferguson quit when he was 29 so I followed suit.

Hey Tex,
9 days is great start! I highly recommend you find a meeting with folks you like. Or at least find a call list from a meeting so you can get somebody on the phone when you get that itch. you can message me but I might not be online when you need to talk. feel free to ask questions though.

FJ

NA/AA meetings make me wanna drink afterwards. Touring works best for me I recently learned. Once I'm in the same city for a few days I get bored and wanna drink. Having someone to message when I feel like drinking is nice, thanks!

My first meetings made me wanna drink also, I always walked in late and out before closing prayers. I did get scared into picking up a white chip one those days. I was sober and thought the idea of powerlessness was due to them being weak willed suckers.

I left and never thought about aa for over ten years. During that time things got good and I started back into old habits. Long story short,I tried out all kinds of methods to stop or moderate but nothing worked. I destroyed alot and couldnt figure out why I drank knowing full well what the consequences could be, that's the night I came back to aa defeated and looking for a solution.

Not everyone needs aa but someone like me who has exhausted all other avenues it can be a life changing program.

I totally agree. I went to a NA meeting with my mom and she lied to get a chip.

12 days!

I have went my entire 30's without drinking!!

How do Muslims feel about having to gto NA when the entire program is centered around the Christian God?

NA and AA should not be based on religion.

As a agnostic, I do not support programs based on religious beliefs that are mandatory for some individuals to take.

Do the have Muslim NA classes?

Theres actually a lot of problems with muslims and going for help at all. Look up some youtube videos they pretty much disown you as it's a bad look for the family.

Plus it's not based on the christian god.

A person's higher power could be anything provided it makes sense to them. Nothing is mandatory in aa.

The NA in Decatur, TX was definitely focused on preaching Christianity.

I say do whatever you have to do to get clean and/or sober, it doesn't matter how you get there as long as you get there alive.

My oldest sister just told me that she was diagnosed with stage 4 cirrhosis and Hep C, she is in total denial. She doesn't fully understand the severity of her situation, until she spoke with me she was under the impression that she will get better because she had stopped drinking for the past 10 days. She also doesn't believe that someone who works all the time could be an alcoholic or addict. At 60 years old you would think she would know better but it just goes to show how insidious alcoholism/addiction can be.

I'm sharing this because I don't want anyone else to get to where my sister is at this point in her life. Get the help you need, don't keep lying to yourself, it doesn't matter how you do it as long as it works.

I used to think going to places like the methadone clinic, AA/NA and similar groups was either a cop out or waste of time, that was until I started meeting people with significant amounts of clean time and realized that each person has to find what works for them, that the journey wasn't as important as the destination.

Today, I choose not to drink

I believe that touring is what held the key for me to quit & watching a clip of Craig Ferguson talk about his alcoholism & how he quit at age 29.

I've always liked craig ferguson, didn't find out he was a sober alcoholic until I was one myself.

I'm grateful to aa for teaching me what it means to be alcoholic and how to recover when every other attempt failed. Its a disease that tells me it doesn't exist and things will be better next time.
