I somehow didn't see this thread until just now, I've been wondering "When will the California actives thread start?"
But man...I'm surprised to see so many patches out there already booming.
I haven't been able to get out and look around at any spots yet and I might end up missing out on this season entirely this time around . I'll be working almost every day all day until christmas eve, and the prime time for actives seems to peak before christmas and starts to wind down after.
Hope I'm able to find & pick a little something tho. I hate not having a personal supply on hand to last me through the year.
The "patch" I tried to start last winter/spring doesn't seem to be fruiting, I see a few wispy threads of mycelium in the substrate but no signs of pins or anything...This is like the 6th year in a row that I've failed at trying to start a patch at home .

Looking good! Here's my haul from going back to a spot today. The shroomery crowd said Psilocybe Allenii.

New spot in Berkeley from today. I've been seeing more allenii than Hypholoma, Leratiomyces, etc. Gotta love it.

Hey. Uhhh, are you sure about that? Haven't seen anyone else chime in and those certainly look like galerina in my opinion in pics 2 and 3. Be careful out there, you can die.
I've encountered Galerina and pretty much every other common mushroom in this habitat multiple times. Admittedly, my pics suck, but Myco and Zen both chimed in too. You can see purple spores on the gills in pic 4, and purple spores on the caps in pic 1. The only mushrooms in that patch are allenii.
Also, great finds guys. Love your pics myco.

Checked a half dozen of my spots today in the East Bay. Two were producing a very light flush of not much more than a few mushrooms. The substrate looked like it needs a LOT more water if they're going to take off. Pretty sure four of the spots are dead as they didn't produce anything last year. I think some scouting is in order.

Yeah those are allenii , all of them. One of them in particular (the big one in the 3rd image) is soooooo pretty

I hope you enjoy these pictures from the east bay today. I feel spore prints on foil are important too. Always get prints. These represent two new patches for me, although only one is shown. Cheers!

Thanks zen. It's true that they don't get that light-colored halo around the edge of the cap that often. P. allenii is a really beautiful species. It might not have the striking wavy cap of cyanescens, but it has a subtle, understated beauty. I'm not even in this for harvesting this year. It's just about the thrill of the hunt and seeing them thriving all over town. Also, the big beauty in pic 3 is the same as the one showing purple gills in pic 4. Nothing but allenii. I left it there to drop more spores.

Hello, I'm Rob. Not trying to intrude on your conversation but I am doing so out of concern for your health. The species shown in picture 4 very much look to me like a Gelerina sub-species (poisonous!). Very common look alike little brown mushroom native to the bay area. The stems are thin, fibrous & cinnamon colored rather than the more dense & solid white stems that I associate with psilocybin. The gills appear to be the same light cinnamon color as the stems, beware. A book I used to own, 'wild mushrooms of North America' identified these type as 'gelerina autumnalis - poisonous, (gastro-intestinal)'. Although current web search for g. Autumnalis seems to draw a blank (perhaps incorrect / unofficial spelling) I would not consume these shrooms. Perhaps the most troubling feature is the absence of any blue / purple bruising where the stems were torn in half when they were picked. I am not an expert on "p. Alleni" subspecies, but in my years of experience I have found every FRESH psilocybin mushroom will turn a blue to dark purple when its tissue is bruised, torn or otherwise damaged. This is caused by reaction of psilocen to atmospheric oxygen. The higher the psilocen/psilocybin content the more rapid and pronounced the blue coloring will appear. I grew up in SF bay area, have hunted & cultivated psilocybin locally since 1983. I wish y'all happy hunting, good health, & high spirits. Take care

The dark purple-black spores are visible in that picture. I don't see any Galerina.

I haven't read/heard that name in a while lol....back in my early days around here I remember that's what most folks were calling "allenii" .
I was able to check one spot I know of yesterday real quick while out running errands around town. There was a few pushing up, maybe 8 tiny pins starting to emerge and poke up out of the woodchips, so I'll check that spot in about a week and see what it's looking like.
I'm probably only going to have one or two days between now and Christmas where I can get out and do some real looking around...Need to get new tires for my bike, on bike is my fav way to "hunt". I can cover lots of ground and get into and out of places quickly.

You guys are the my inspiration for hunting today. I came to one of the areas I saw on iNature and within 5 mins found a huge Allenii patch and one big Cyans and a couple pins. I’ll Upload pics later. I’m so pumped.
