Question regarding properly hydrated WBS
    #27050522 - 11/21/20 02:16 PM (3 years, 2 months ago)

When WBS is properly hydrated, what would you say the percentage increase in size from dry would be?  I’ve tried 24hr soak, soaked for 30min in boiling water and both of those seemed to come out with maybe a 15-20% increase in size at best.  Last week I tried some no prep quart jars with varying amounts of water and saw anywhere from 25-50% increase.  Just wondering what I should be aiming for as I’m still sitting on a shit ton of WBS and would like to use it as effectively as I can.  Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

I usually see 50%, perhaps slightly higher expansion with no-prep WBS in quart jars. Jars are filled to ~375ml with WBS, given slightly less than half that volume of water, then PCed. I stopped prepping birbseed long ago for the sake of ease, and now only use it for jars. Don't have any data from alternate hydration methods for comparison, but I hope this helps.

Yeah, I said birb.

It wasn’t until I did some no prep jars that I realized I might have a problem with my grain prep.  The expansion I saw in those jars was much greater than what I’d seen so far.  Thank you for the response, it definitely helps.
