I have grown shiitakes in the past and had pretty good luck. I am now planning to grow oysters, lion's mane and chicken of the woods with plug spawn. I live in central Florida and live on several acres of hardwood forest, which gives me access to trees. We have a lot of oaks and sweetgums. I just cut up a freshly fallen large oak branch, about 9" diameter at the base end, and can cut down others. Mushroom log questions: - Does length matter? Are long logs better? Although harder to handle. The biggest one is over a hundred pounds. Can I cut it into shorter lengths without problems? - Should I bother inoculating smaller logs, 3" or less? - Is sweetgum better or faster than oak? It is a softer wood than oak. - What are the best wood species for the mushroom varieties I'm growing?
