Beginning surface conditions check
    #27048828 - 11/20/20 01:37 PM (3 months, 3 days ago)

Hey guys,

This is the first time I've tried to grow my own mushrooms. I've used the easy AF UnMod and substrate bucket mix as I thought this would be the easiest and most cost effective way to start.

I however haven't seen anything indicating surface conditions when you first start a Tek.

I have seen surface conditions when the colonisation is underway and how you want beading, but for the first few days what's the craic?

The coir is certainly moist AF the myc hasn't had time to fully spread yet so it's not creating its own heat. So do I spray until I get little beads or do I wait until the myc has taken grasp a bit more?

Help would be very much appreciated

Just let it be.  Don't mist it if it doesn't need it.  They are designed to be hands off, not micromanaged.

How will I know if it needs it though? Just nooby questions.

I've done a lot of research but nothing that's clear on the part between mixing spawn and full colonisation.
Seems to be a gap there of what to do re surface conditions

If you check on it and it looks really super bone dry, then you can give it a mist. It's all about experience and a bit of common sense which can be confusing at first, but if you're unsure I have found it better just to leave it be and let it do it's thing.

Put the lid on and wait.

If your sub was at field capacity then it should be able to sustain itself all the way to first flush...unless you live in the desert, but even at that you should have decent climate control inside your house.

Just set it and forget it for about 10 days

A simplified answer is to watch the color of the coco coir on top.  Dry coco coir will look like the color of the brick/bale that you made the substrate from.  You're not seeing much about it since there is nothing to do if you follow Bod's teks.

Absolutely spot on answers guys.

Seems to be doing its thing here on day 2 and it's definitely growing pretty quick.

Will just keep an eye and make sure it's moist but not damp each day.
