I was actually just thinking about bumping this thread yesterday. I looked but couldn't find anything better than Asante already found - read: very expensive wells, comparatively.

I was kinda hoping Asante was still planning on doing the research, as I thought he said he was.

I'm trying to get in the Christmas Spirit and give some of my money away, darnit!

Guys, I discussed this with the other admins and on one hand there wasn't a particular fondness to support a charity involved in saving human lives in an overpopulated world and on the other hand felt that the generous benefactors among us should directly interact with the charity to get their donations tax deductible, so that the site shouldnt intermediate in the fundraising process.

So that's basically the situation.

On another note, Santa has shaved off his beard so a mouthmask could be worn.

Guys, thank you for your extraordinary generosity right at the drop of a hat but, it will have to be a grassroots initiative from the members upwards.

Excuse me guys, I'm off.

o.O lol, while i can see the seeming logic of this, it's shortsighted logic. a third world country will not suddenly stop producing lots of humans because of a lack of water - the problem will continue to exist and it will simply remain a third world country.

the better way is to elevate third world countries to first world countries, looking at their problems, helping them on the fast track to self-sufficiency, by raising their education level and getting them on their feet. because other countries have already "paved the way", so to speak, a third-world country can rapidly progress to second world and above far faster than its predecessors. this DOES cause a short term population boom for a generation or two as families are still producing several children each, but those children are (mostly) all expected to survive... but after that initial population boom, those children grow up to be higher educated and are much more likely to only have 2-3 kids each, settling into a stable population or even decreasing growth, like other first world countries. (see japan, or even the USA, which is continuing to decrease in growth rate each year - at this rate we're going to go negative like them in a few decades.)

not only does this lower the global population in the long term, but it also increases the total amount of people who are highly educated and contributing to the world economy at large, instead of being a burden on it's resources, even though it's often not (or not entirely)any fault of their own. instead of say, 10 countries working on trying to solve cancer, you might have 30. instead of 100 million scientists around the world, you now have 500 million.

that's a lot of extra brainpower and a lot of extra advancement that benefits all of humanity at large.

Yeah... This is something logic so easily refuted I"m a bit disappointed. That's something I'd expert someone to grow out of after about age 20, at the latest. I guess as with anywhere, the people of power are rarely the intellectual elite in the regular world also.

Well, I am committed. I will find what I deem to be an appropriate charity and donate $50 to, then post a picture. Anyone who feels committed can do so as well.

I agree with you Psion, its proven the world over that people will make fewer babies the higher their living standard becomes - many babies are a strategy against starving around middle ahe because as soon as the age of 5 children become helping hands around the household.

Such as carrying water, back and forth, in 30 liter/8 gallon tubs, on their heads, for hours on end, instead of getting an education. It is often children tasked vwith this and in remote a5reas this means that the water bearing kids cannot attend primary education and thus, are lost souls once adult because they are uneducated in even elementary school mainstays.

I personally think that tellig people who struggle to survive to make less babies, which increases their struggle on a later age, is like prescribing a calorie restricted diet to an anorexic. Especially in the light of the fact that our carbon footprint is 30x bigger than theirs, highlighting their overpopulation seems a bit of victim blaming, also considering 30x more wealth is extracted from Africa that is invested into it from the outside world, and that the African migrants in the outside world send in more money to their home continent than all aid programs in the world put together.|

Only yesterday I told am online friend, a propos, what I had done. His response was telling.

First, he said "why can't those people dig their own well?"

Dude, these wells are 100-200ft deep, this is an engineering feat and these people have their hands full to the point of not letting their kids go to school to get water.

Then, he said "then why don't their governments pay for it?"

Dude, not just do we have billionaires with more money that one or two dozsen African countries but we also own the IMF and World Bank who squeeze every cent out of then in interest on interest on loans they have no choice but taking.

next "I saw a video where they built a well, it ran out of gas and nobody had nothing so it was useless anyway."

Dude, the villagers themselves are taught to build wells with local materials, these wells are hand cranked so no fuel needed, they are insured for maintenance for 5 years and after that new sponsors are sought for them."

then he said "its not as simple as that, little donations like this mean nothing."

Dude. it means the world to these 600 people and to the approximately 2000+ people when my other two wells roll out. Little donations huh? How many krugerrands did you drop on charity lately?

Finally, "charity is no use."

:knowwhatnevermind:

This is the main reason why Africa is still severely underdeveloped. Everybody is hands off for helping them but everybody is hands on for extracting their resources for-profit for barely a cent on the dollar.

Add a ton of problems of their own, blend, stir, and you have the current situation.

I find it very frustrating.

I would like to donate if we have someone trustworthy over seeing the process

$50 is fine by me

Over populated? So who has to go?

As we become more developed population rate naturally declines.

We need to learn to live more sustainable.

I hope this ends uo happening. If not it has at least inspired me to seek out some legitimate charities to donste to who are doing good work and making a positive difference in the world.

I highly endorse this, for anyone who is so willing.

Maybe a generous guy from OTD will surprise us with a well with on the sign:

Sincerely, OTD.

But we'll see how this cookie crumbles.

And it is of course true that when you give directly to a charity of your choice, your gift is tax deductible.

Maybe we can each in our own ways disprove that "this world is shit" by doing good works and speaking of them and if possible show pictures for the feelgood of us all.

So if you help out feeding the homeless in a soup kitchen, donate to MAPS, take your pet rabbit to the old folks home for a heavy petting session, show us the pics and show us all that this world is as awesome as we choose to make it.

Shall we make this our feelgood December project in this generally feelbad year guys? Please post pics, vids, graphic details not to be a braggard but to convey the good feeling to us all as thoroughly as you can.

Tis the season!  :christmas:

reposting this kurzgesagt video here, as well as another one regarding the overpopulation of humanity and the ways to tackle the issue:

Overpopulation:

The case for Egoistic altruism:

they're really entertaining videos, short and to the point, very well researched. also, animated birds.  :birdfive:

just in case people are wondering why the heck should we care about the suffering of people half a world away when it doesn't even affect us.

the truth is, everything is connected. the butterfly effect is real, and it's orders of magnitude stronger when sentient beings are involved. countries in strive might not seemingly affect you now, but they're hotspots for disease to breed (and possibly spread to other parts of the world!), they are places for conflict to start (and possibly spread!), and they're places where science is NOT being done and economies are NOT flourishing (which is bad for everyone - less science and less trade is never a good thing!

think of all of humanity as one giant super-organism. why in the world would you not care about your liver, or your heart, or your femur? your eye, your arteries, your lung? likewise, all those countries, big and small, are vital in their own way. when they're not thriving, the entire super-organism that is the world economy, that is humanity, suffers. we all are losers. there is no such thing as winners and losers when there are third and first world countries - only a blow to all of humanity.

this is a race where all of us win, or all of us lose. that's all there is to it.

actually, it would probably be a better idea to import those "smart asians" and other smart foreigners right away, the sooner the better. the fresh new outlook from them would mean they'd be in instant influence on higher up places, such as CEO positions, politics, and science fields in our country. considering most of those other first world countries are doing way better in the happiness scale than ours, their own knowledge of how their own countries infrastructure and governments run could then be compared to ours, and a new fusion of ideas could be created.

america is the 1.0 of capitalism that helped inspire a 2.0 of governments, creating things like the european union (among other factors - they were individually too weak, but collectively they realized they could be a powerful player in the world, so banded together) - but what if those other first world countries were to bring their own ideas back to america and help upgrade it's outdated government, showing what they learned from america and bringing it to a "3.0" version of government? suddenly we wouldn't be some flailing well-well meaning but destructive behemoth in the world, but a true leader to inspire and uplift the rest of the world.

america first is the wrong way to look at things. we're all in this together. we should always be reaching out to each other, asking each other for help and helping each other in turn, no matter where in the world they are, no matter who they are.

Well i think some of those other countries out there would fuck us in a heartbeart

Im not saying dont bring other people in but i dont see why we shouldnt prioritize our own soil

I bet china would fuck us hard if they could

Might even be a line of countries wanting to fuck us

I think theres some world leaders who dont share that sentiment and mentality. Who wouldnt mind fucking us

you're confusing a few corrupt leaders with their immigrants. that's like china saying they shouldn't import any americans in because they're all like trump. granted, there are plenty of americans like trump...but there are also plenty of americans who are the absolute polar opposite of trump.

and many of the "smart scientist" type ones? they're the complete opposite of trump. scientists, by overwhelming majority, tend to be altruistic by nature. science doesn't tend to pay much for many fields, it's competitive, and thankless hard work, where you're often criticized or even persecuted/downright threatened to be killed for your efforts. many scientists even pay for their research out of their own pockets. for free. not for profit, but simply to try and make the world a better place, or out of sheer curiosity and the wonder of it all.

world leaders aren't generally interested in immigrating. they have plenty of power wealth, and are quite happy staying secure in their power bases. (except when they fuck up and get overthrown i guess.)

After having been kicked out of bed by a Charley Horse I'm having wound pain of screaming intensity but I won't scream to not alarm my neighbors.

Hopefully this new antibiotic, Flucloxacillin will overcome the so far treatment resistance to the topical antibiotic prescribed before.

Gonna look into whether it could be effective to turn one of the 40 capsules into an ointment to locally reach higher concentrations than by mere systemic use alone, fight it from both sides.

I should have fucking bought that bottle of veterinary iodine solution because it would have been a choice 5 minutes but at least whats in the wound would be fucking dead.

Maybe improvise some Modified Dakin's Solution like its fucking Trench Foot in WW1.

That sounds like the way to go. Fuck narrow spectrum antibiotic creams when you can sodium hypochlorite the fuck out of any kind of microorganism that might be in there. There is no resistance against alkaline oxidative chlorination from any wound pathogen. In developing nations and disaster areas they use this for surgical and other critical wounds, I'm gonna be OK.

If I can't come to the pool, the pool's gonna come to me.

Chlorinate the fucker.

Cleaning the wound with Dakin's is going to be a choice moment to separate the boys from the men.

I'M IN PAIN FRIENDS :crankey:

I need to desinfect this fucker so I can dress the wound and apply compression bandages again to squeeze the fluids out of the underlying edema.

I got shit to do  :alphabrain:

Guys and witches..  :witch:

YOU ARE NOT GOING TO BELIEVE THIS.

And that's allright with me because hey, from my point of view your belief of a story you hear has less priority than what I actually experience in real life.

Seeing is believing, right?

Earlier this morning I grunted towards my inner dialogue who claims to be God "CAN'T WE STRIKE A DEAL HERE?! YOU ARE GIVING ME A LOT OF SUFFERING HERE!" :crankey:  He said: "Absolutely, thanks for asking, I'll get back to you on that."

Anyhoo, just now, I get up from my computer to do the deed and he reminds me: "get a syringe from the attic to precisely get the concentration right"

I open the door to my attic.

Out of nowhere, a whole bunch of shit lies there at the base of the winding stairs. I empathically go "God-DAMMIT!!" and bend to pick it up...

Turns out its this mound of packaged sterile gauzes and windings.

:aghast:

Says he: "Pretty UNDENIABLE this time huh? Now that its needed."

"HOW?"

"Translocation of objects, we are working on this, remember? Now, you have a selection of bandages, you just remembered Dakin's solution in that half angry post of yours. You tend to your "war wound" while I um, I don't know, accompany some starving kids in Africa in their dying minute. This is not a guilt trip but a reminder to take the pain you are about to face as relative to all suffering on earth. Do your thing, medic of field expedient medicine."

So, I boiled 60ml water, added 0.5ml of fresh Chlorine Bleach I was asked to buy for the Covid pandemic, washed the wound with a sterile gauze wet with it, relished my Happy Tree Friend moment which wasnt that much worse than the pain I already had, carefully cleaned with just boiled water, found a desinfectant drenched wound patch among the assorted bandages, applied it, compression bandages back on and now I'm sitting here in less pain than I was, being giddy about what in Gods name just happened.

EDIT:

I was moved by event, sufficiently so to take 50 bucks, break it in two and donate 1 half towards a small and currently troubled orphanage of 102 kids in Kenya and donating a First Aid Kit towards Africa

through the charity thats digging my water wells. They responded immediately adding they were under maximal pressure because there has been an unprecendented number of water well orders so that they had to temporarily disable the possibility to order water wells.

That gave me a nice early december christmas feeling :christmas:

I got a wound on my leg that got infected with antibiotic resistant bacteria, my calves and ankles swollen up like a Ninja Turtle. 3 antibiotics in succession, the third was a charm, an antibiotic with a substance added to prevent bacteria from rendering it inactive. The wound care unit visits twice a week to redress the wound and reapply the compression bandages. I had a replacement doctor, a young lady a bit taken by this middle aged gray haired man, she prescribed a highest quality skin care product on indication, and decided to make it an open ended prescription, refillable when needed, so in essence I now have a pharmacy grade skin care product for life, entirely for free, very useful for a frequent swimmer of chlorinated pools - the whole medical rigmarole didnt cost me a thing, good insurance in a nation with universal health care -- I wish it on everybody.

I decided to airdrop a first aid kit with a whole bunch of stuff in it for medics to treat injuries far worse than mine. I threw 60 poliovaccins and 160 tetanusvaccins in the mix, a little reading light powered by solar for a kid to study by, a high tech polymer "indestructable" football that wont need inflating and will serve hundreds of kids for up to 25 years, a rooster and hens for an orphanage and finally, 4 Jackfruit trees which will each be planted by an orphanage or similar community center, as decided based on greatest need by the village chiefs.

Jackfruit is considered "the food of the future" for developing nations. Apart from being healthy, obviously, a single jackfruit fruit can weigh up to 100lbs and a mature tree can produce up to 200 such fruits a year. This will produce a great excess for the ones owning the tree, which they can take toi the market and sell. The trees are readily multiplied. So, 4 of those in 4 places of greatest need.

Am I rich? No all these things are much cheaper than you think and I worked with covid in mind since the beginning so I managed to save some extra bucks to blow, and this seemed the best way to blow it.

Those Jackfruit trees are serious assets to whoever owns them, and this 4x for 25 bucks. Very efficient use of funds. The jackfruit tree drills its roots towards the aquifer on solar power and fills up scores of fruits of scores of pounds each, storing moisture and nutrients as fruit. Check out these videos, its the most ridiculous tree you've ever seen, a very stout serious tree with an insane number of huge fruits hanging on it. This is good stuff to own, within 3 years fruits start growing and it becomes a serious tree up to 100 foot high. Check it:
