Long term effects of psilocybin mushroom usage?
    #27049883 - 11/21/20 05:25 AM (3 years, 2 months ago)

Hi everyone. I tried mushrooms for the first time last year, as a previously "sober" man for the first 33 years of my life. Since then, I have had around 8 or 9 trips (typically dosing between 1.2 - 2.5g of dried liberty caps. My only bad trip coming from the highest dose.

Long story short. Mushrooms have been an incredible benefit to my life in many unexpected ways. They always seem to give me what I need at the time, whether it be a hard lesson delivered in a beautiful way or whether it be a nice time amidst a difficult point in life.

I have plenty of bad habits but not with any sort of substance (I've never even touched a drop of alcohol). I'm wanting mushrooms (and possibly other psychedelics but we will focus on mushrooms right now) to be a part of my life going forward but I'm curious about any negative effects of continued mushroom use? I'm not talking about tripping every few days, I'm talking about using them as a "medicine" as and when needed.

Is there any research in to the negative effects of mushrooms in the longer term? I always thought weed was the "safe drug" but I know very few weed smokers who would recommend smoking it habitually. That being said, it seems way more acceptable to smoke weed than taking mushrooms, generally speaking.

To be honest, the downside (if any) would have to be significant for me to stop having the odd trip as the benefits to me are so great. However, I want to be aware of any potential negative effects moving forward!

Any info would be much appreciated, thanks in advance!

By the way you describe taking it when you feel it's needed, you seem to respect it as medicine and have the self control not to abuse it.

I don't know of any negative effects of using it in moderation. It's cliche, but moderation really is key to these things. I find respect super important too, for any substance.

Glad that you've found them

I've never heard of any long term downsides, but I don't actually know anyone that is a 'long term' pshychedic user.

You seem like you're being very responsible, and the benefits you are getting are great 😁

The only potential downside depending on your perspective, is how they change your way of thinking in the long term. I’ve used mushrooms for 35 years, but four weeks ago found I could no longer live with my wife of 37 years. I’m heartbroken now, but I’m convinced the mushrooms started me thinking something was wrong.

Ask me again in a year and I could be telling you the exact opposite; that mushrooms helped save me from years of misery and turned my life back around to the sunny side of the street :cookiemonster:

Take care

No there is no downside like you're asking about.  Use is very much self regulating and generally only beneficial.  This includes occasional use or regular use, there is almost no way to actually abuse them (as a drug that is).

Of course they may put you in intimate touch with your inner thought processes, which could lead you to change all kinds of things about your life as a result. :cookiemonster:

There is a certain loss of thought control that could become problematic if someone takes mushrooms for purely recreational reasons. Doesn't apply what they learn or strive for mastery over their demons.

I've heard of people getting ptsd from bad trips although I've never met anybody who has suffered from this... I've taken some large doses, borderline reckless doses, and have been scared but when the trip ends I haven't had any lasting fear problems. I've heard of far more long term positive changes than negative changes in people's lives... I'd recommend trying lsd. I personally find it even more spiritual than mushrooms. I've had strong God experiences on lsd.

This is from a well known authority of long-term shroom use:

Long-term side effects may include, but are not limited to: Not being such an asshole, uncovering the mysteries of life, pealing back the matrix and viewing the source code, increased fulfilment and gratitude, interaction with alien beings, coherent visions of past lives as reptilians creatures, conversations with god, being ravenously hungry when you come down, loving yourself and others and possibly shitting yourself.

Like I said - this information is taken from the top source on long-term mushroom use.  Very scientific if you ask me...

I've heard they may trigger psychiatric illnesses on people who have a family history, like panic attacks or something like that. It's kind of similar with cannabis. I've never felt anything like this but i've only been using them for a year or so.

Also,I think there's a variety that may affect your kidneys (I think Amanita? not sure)

Anyways, Dj Ed it's been using them for 35 years so I'd listen to him.

@Tombo46
In my opinion the main risk is HPPD. I suggest that you take long breaks between the trips. If you ever notice any signs of HPPD, stop taking mushrooms immediately.
You can test yourself for HPPD in a simple way. Close yourself in a dark and quiet room. If you see "digital noise" that was not there before, and can hear white noise in your head that was not there before either, then you are getting first signs of HPPD. Another way to test for it is if you look outside the window trying to verify whether it rains or not, and you can't tell whether it is drizzling or it is the visual distortion in your brain, then it means your brain is fucked.

If you suddenly wake up at night and you are tripping with full-on visuals, even though you have stayed sober for a few months, it means something is happening. Ignore it and go back to sleep.

I love this thread, made me laugh a few times....

I have been taking these for about three years now. Started very light and the got into growing my own and using them about once a month. Although this year I have only done two journeys.

I told my doctor what I was doing and she said that she was not worried at all. It is NOT a drug of abuse and I certainly had enough respect and self control.

You sound the same.

Some advice on how to avoid shitting yourself:  Have a clean diet wit plenty of fibre and vegetables in the week or so before and fast on the day if not the day before as well.  That way there will be nothing in your system to crap yourself with.

You were right. Universe is a computer program. We are living inside a software that creates an illusion of material world.

As the characters are hardened with age, the unrealistic thoughts might be more persistent for those that use shrooms merely as an escape. That can lead to bad decision making which is a long-term consequence. But should we really blame it on the chemical psilocybin, when it is more based on their intentions?

Sorry to hear that brother. I am more than sure it was for the better if you did take that plunge and decided to end things. I'm sure it was something you thought about subconsciously, but the mushrooms really highlighted that part of your life.

Stay strong buddy.
