Kit Results
    #27048803 - 11/20/20 11:17 AM (3 years, 2 months ago)

Greetings all. I know there is much controversy about using kits rather than doing it yourself from scratch. Nevertheless, I think they have their place. And I believe some of them are improving. Are used the “Deluxe Spawn Bag Kit“ from midwest grow kits. I did not use the spawn bags. Rather, I used 3 of their 16 ounce Quick Colonizing Grain Jars, inoculated with a 10cc spore syringe, mixed into their 5 lb Premium Select Bulk Casing Mix.

I just harvested the first flush and I am happy with the 643 gms wet yield. Currently dunking in prep for second flush.

I think regardless of how 'good' the kit is as far as I understand it spawns to grain is always risky. It's (almost?) impossible to make a perfectly clean spore syringe and (almost?) impossible to check if a spore syringe is clean without going to agar, which if you're going to do you may as well as be doing your own grain etc.

I do feel there is a place for well made kits though. As long as they focus on teks that are suitable for consistent MSS grows.

Congrats but, along with the much higher rate of failure with kits, they're also not economical. You could spend a fraction of the cost making jars by yourself and get the same or better yields.

Also, since most of them are pre-sterilized, you really aren't learning one of the most important part of growing, and that is preparing substrate.

Irregardless, congrats on your haul! If you continue the hobby, I don't think grow kits will be economically feasible in the long run. So get ta learnin!

Is it that much more economical? The casing was $18.00 for 5 lbs and the three jars came to $21.00. Time needed for sourcing shopping and sterilizing has a cost too. I do hope to someday go with agar for innoculating....when I have the time.

This is true, but most people don't roll their own cigarettes. Most artists don't make their own paint. etcetera.

That being said, I admire the hobbyists and the knowledge they accumulate and share. Indeed, there must be considerable satisfaction in producing a grow from scratch. But like I said, I think kits have their place. Frankly, the cost of growing them, even from a kit, is sooo much less than sourcing them, and with a yield like I got, there is more than enough for personal use and some sharing for quite a while. Seeing it grow I wished I had gone bigger, but after harvest I realize I would have more than I could use.

It cost me less than $4 US to spawn a 56 litter tub. That tub being a mix of rye berries from my local feed store and bulk bags of coco coir and vermiculite from my local gardening store.

My current tubs are yielding 9 ounces dried a tub over 2-3 flushes.

Thats $4 for half a pound of mushrooms.

But I do have some pretty big bags of grain, verm, and coir sitting in my living room. 😅 No where else to fit them. Lol.

The total cost of those bulk bags altogether was $76. But I reckon thats like 20 tubs worth.

it is much cheaper to do it on your own. After initial investment, subsequent grows only cost a few dollars. and like others have said, you will learn so much more doing on your own

Yea I think this is the main point I was trying to get across when I wrote my post.

If you'll only grow once, then you might as well go for a Kit as everything will be useless after one grow. But if you want to continue, I think doing it yourself will be the best in the long run.

I'm not saying kits don't have their place. We all pay for convenience because time is money. I guess I just have an attachment to doing it all from scratch because I've fallen in love with the hobby. But I went all in right away and put a pretty hefty upfront investment to get all the bells and whistles (proper PC, great dehydrator, etc). Now my grows are free.

At the end of the day, I agree that it's preferable to grow than to buy them off the street, no matter your grow method.

I wish you much success in your future grows!
