Is this a Woodland Chanterell?
    #27048563 - 11/20/20 08:49 AM (3 years, 2 months ago)

This large orange mushroom had many other kinds of mushrooms growing around it.  It has all the water it wants growing in a drain.

PANW forest, mid october
pale orange brown
large
growing in rocky dirt
many other mush nearby
growing in drain
long gills extend down stem
short stem
light brown spores

Hi Matanga, this looks like a Lactarius sp. to me, but I would double check Hygrophoropsis aurantiaca.

Paxillus sp. is my guess.

Nah, neither of those leave brown spore prints.

Hi Angler - true, and I had wondered about Paxillus as well...

The spore deposit looks more yellowish/ochre to me than brown which lines up with Paxillus, and also happens sometimes with heavy spore deposits from Lactarius.

OP, did your collections "bleed" latex when cut?

Oh it really does look like a Paxillus.  It didn't bleed at all when cut.  I did find some tiny gray mushrooms that bled white when picked.
