Identification request
    #2698793 - 05/18/04 09:49 PM (19 years, 10 months ago)

Hi. I know very little about mushrooms and fungi and I would appreciate any help in identifying what I saw growing on a tree in a park in Atlanta. I am very curious as to what it is or even if it is in fact a mushroom or fungi (please excuse my ignorance). Please look at the attached picture. Any help would be appreciated!

That looks to be close to Hericium erinaceus or Hericium americanum. It's a little hard to tell from the photo, but it should have a bunch of downward hanging spines that are white (or nearly white) and fleshy. There are a couple of similar species, but all of them are excellent edibles (you need to verify that it has the spines I'm talking about).

If it is, you might want to make a spore print. I'll bet that the folks in the Cultivation Forums would love to try cultivating that. They are cultivated commercially and have an excellent flavor. When fresh and sauteed in butter they resemble crab or lobster somewhat in texture and flavor (my opinion). When they get older they tend to develop a somewhat disagreeable sour flavor.

Happy mushrooming!

I know you are new to fungi but I believe that's actually a white kola bear, or perhaps some unflavored cotton candy stuck to a tree. Both are pyschoactive, but the cotton candy contains an amount of sugar approaching ld50 and is classified as a toxin.

Cool find. Looks like it must be a type of Lions Mane.

I've heard that they grow here in florida also, but ive never spotted one myself.

Hi all, didn't want to start a new thread so found one with an apropriate title. Hope that's ok.
Anyone recognise these babies?
They are growing on a beach front in the grass.
A short while after picking them they went dark green just on the edge tip. This photo was taken about 5hrs later (still with the dark green edge all the way around)
And are they psycoactive?

TIA

Hi beammeup, & welcome. If you need an id for a mushroom please follow the guidelines below. Post in accordance and hopefully someone can help you.
Also feel free to look over GumbyDude's ***PLEASE READ*** Forum Rules and Guidelines + Quick ID Tips

Quote:

Accurate mushroom descriptions

It is critical that you describe mushrooms fully and accurately in order to get a proper identification.

A good picture of the mushrooms is invaluable.

Along with the pictures (if possible), please include the following:

a. Habitat (where [state/province/country] and what does it grow on)
b. Characteristics of the gills (color, attached/not, gills/pores, etc)
c. Measurements of cap and stem.
d. Characteristics of the stem (color, texture, hollow/solid, thin/thick, etc)
e. Characteristics of the cap (color, texture, conical/spherical, convex/concave, etc)
f. Spore print color (very important!)
g. Color that the mushroom bruises
h. Scent of mushroom

For more detailed guidelines for describing your finds, please view this document.

For an explanation of mycological terms please refer to this document .

Yes Mitchnast and I too eat Goldfish. What a big fisherman you are. Blue gills and Goldfish man.

I use to carry a can of worms and tell people I was getting nightcrawlers for fishing. Never had to carry a rod and reel around in a field. OF course in America, there is "No Trepassing. No Trespassing under Penalty of Lawn," and No Trepassing: Trespassers will be Prosecuted."

In the PNW, people picking shreooms in pastures can get a no trespassing ticket and their shrooms confiscated. Usually they will not prosecute for the possession of the shrooms because they take them away.

Nice thing about living in PNW and in any major city is that the mushrooms are all over the city. 5 to 6 species and a few sometimes will grow all year long, except in the real hot summer months.

And here is my Goldfish eating ensemble so if you want to dance? Step into the Ring with me. Here I am waiting and ready and I bet I can swallow more Goldfish than you could ever catch.

So Mitchnast. Are you brave enough to face me in the ring with a bowl of Goldfish?

i have currently over 40 goldfish, one male is over 5 lbs and the sire of half the current count. the others i caught in ponds.
ive had the male for 5 years.  ive lost more 4-6 lb goldfish to natural causes (parasites, freezes, cats, etc) than i ever bothered to count

heres a pic of my pond, which i installed by hand while landscaping with dung which i seeded with pan subbs, heres a shot of my pond, fish, some decent subbs from the lawn, and a cup of java, of which i drink a plenty.
to be fair, i was 20 by this time. im now 23.
ive got lots of time to be the best at what you do

i only swallowed the mushrooms tho
however, for the goldfish swallowing gold around my waist. i might just have to put up

you however have a rather large advantage. over me
