Is my perlite too big?

The stuff I was using was way too small and blocking airflow, but is this stuff too big for the sgfc?
And if it's good to go, do I still do 5 inches or adjust for the difference in surface area?

Figured as much, just didnt know if there was an ideal size, and I dont mind crubling some up a bit.
Thoughts on if i should still do 5 inches or adjust for surface area differences?

Being bigger, it won’t fall through the holes.

It also won’t compact down as easily and do a better job raising the chambers humidity.

Can confirm that bigger perlite is better. I would have killed for some perlite that corse when I was running SGFCs. Smaller perlite turns to mud at the bottom of an SGFC and clogs the holes. Corse perlite allows much more room for air to flow up and through the perlite and tub.

So, 2 of my pins seem to have possibly prematurely broken their veils?
I'm not sure but I don't think things look right and i'm still having trouble telling when to mist.
They never glisten until all the sudden they're soaked.
I bounce back and forth all day wondering if i'm drowning them or letting them dry out.
Also I have 2 identical POS thermometer/hygrometers both showing WILDLY differing readouts. One says its 64f in there and one says 75f, and one says 80% humidity and the other says 93.
Can you look at this and tell me what you think?

Those all look saturated. I would dial the misting back a fair bit.

Throw away the hygrometer. I can tell just by looking at your pictures that those cakes are heavily over saturated with water. Let them dry out quite a bit before misting again. Evaporation is a key pinning trigger. Let them dry out, then rehydrate, dry out, rehydrate and so on.
Edit, post #200 lol

Thanks, I had a feeling. Should I leave the lid off for that or just leave it alone and dont touch for a couple days?
Thats my biggest problem is hovering and checking on them and giving them a little spritz. Its almost compulsive.
Really unchill and unlike me.

IME mushrooms do best when you set them up for success and then leave them the fuck alone.

So is the whole "mist until glistening" thing outdated?
I'll absolutely leave them alone if thats whats needed, I'm just trying to do the right thing without knowing what that thing is.
How will I know the difference between just right and too dry?

It’s not outdated, you just have to look at em only occasionally and mist when it’s dry. You can see the difference between wet and dry verm.
You’re just obsessing over them too much right now... (and quite understandable) A watched mushroom never grows...
Let them dry off a couple days then mist em...
They need that evaporation to pin...
You’ll know when it’s just right. Cause your mushrooms will grow right.
Just keep them happy and they’ll make you happy...
Cheers.

Cool man, thanks a bunch. So they aren't fucked beyond repair from the overhydrating?

I don’t think they’re fucked by any means. They’re just gonna need a little TLC. And by TLC I mean leave em alone for a bit

Roger that.
One last thing (thanks so much for your patience)
How important is rehydrating the perlite and when and how should I go about it?

Every two week and I would say its pretty important. The perlite is maintaining the humidity in the chamber.

For real, just dont totally neglect them. Gotta monitor them once in a while to make sure the substrate isnt drying out.
But yeah, less is more

IMO, I’d say once a month you rehydrate it. OR when you don’t see condensation on the walls... It’s important because that is what provides the humidity for the SGFC... Take the cakes out, set them down somewhere clean (they’re totally colonized so they’re all good to be set down) and rinse that perlite. Some people like to do it with a bit H202 as well. I don’t recommend breaking that out unless you actually see contamination. Cheers!
