Pleurotus Eryngii/Agrocybe Aegerita quesitons (and general stuff)
    #27047365 - 11/19/20 01:35 PM (3 years, 4 months ago)

Hey!

:sporedrop:

Its gonna be my fisrt experience with gourmet mushrooms and I have some questions.

I was thinking in growing Pleurotus Eryngii from a spore stamp, my questions are:

1-You need a Eryngium campestre for growing this mushroom?

2-Its the same as the "king oyster mushroom"? It looks kinda different if you look at different images.

https://www.fichasmicologicas.com/uploads/tx_txgastromicologia/Pleurotus_eryngii.jpg

https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/a/ac/Pleurotus_eryngii.jpg/235px-Pleurotus_eryngii.jpg

3-Its the thick stem due to growing indoors?

4-Something special/important to keep in mind for this specie?

4-Can I grow them like:

Spore print-Agar/LC-WBS-Sawdust+shoebox?

Another option is to grow Agrocybe Aegerita, would it be easier for a first gourmet mushroom grow experience?

I'm also going to grow Pleurotus Djamor from a mycelium bag, maybe also gonna try to G2G it, and use a bucket tek, idk.

Thank you for yout time, guys!

What is your reasoning to grow king oyster from spores?
Can't you get a Petri dish or liquid culture or spawn of the mushroom you are interested in?
There is no need to grow edibles from spores, already well-know strains are readily available and for cheap.

This mushroom is valued for it stipe. Stipe is big because more CO2 and less O2, that is why it is possible to do it in shoebox, unlike other oysters that need much more O2 and less CO2 and are valued for their caps, not chewy stipes.

You can do 4.

Ty~
I start from spores because I get them almost free, and I already have the material for agar and so.

Spores will give you random characteristics, but you need a consistency.
Rather clone a store mushroom.

I see.
Sooo... its a really bad idea?
I mean, cant I just spore-Agar-Grain with some results? (not profesional or smth, just for try)

When they're collected in the wild they come to be from MS, no?

This is absolutely possible...most cubensis growers start from ms and through time isolate clones they're happy with until they have a beast of a culture!
Same applies here, it's just very time consuming..however the reward of having your own set of genetics that you've found,worked,maintained..priceless!

ive grown kings from spore and gotten great results. I think it is awesome to grow from spores because you can get random genetics. Think if you have some weird substrate you want to utilize, a MS grow has the best chance of finding the genetics that can chow down on the weirdo stuff.

i would recommend cloning a good looking mushroom or cluster after your MS grow, narrowing the genetic material for future grows.

1. eryngium campestre?? no you dont need whatever that is.

2. p enryngii is king oyster

3. longer stems and smaller caps are due to high co2, thick could be due to genetics or nutrition in substrate.

4. eryngii like a little colder temps like 65F maximum.

Yes, the ms-weird substrate its a good point.
The E.Campeste its a plant.

In nature, Pleurotus Eryngii is usually associated with the roots of this plant, which is why it receives that name. "Eryngii" - "Eryngium"

Temperatures where I live are not a problem for this strain.

And yeah if i get something decent with ms i will clone it in agar. It is a long but entertaining process.

:sporedrop:

Sooo... do you think that a good combo is:

MS -Agar (for possible contams)- WBS- bulk (sawdust/chips+coir???) Into a bag, bottle or smth-cold shock (1 week)-Monotube with pretty high Co2-Cloning

Thank you~!

The problem with getting a mushroom bought for cloning is that I hardly ever saw them here. And if I saw them, they dont have a worth quality for clonning, I think.

use sawdust or hardwood fuel pellets (there's plenty links around if you use the search function)
sterilize the substrate in bags.
inoculate with grains and let colonize.
I give them some consolidation time but others don't (from spawn to fruiting 20-35 days)
topfruit under high humidity (90%) and 18°C.

good luck!

Thank you guys~

I saw in the forum that there's the possibility of doing it with straw, and not hardwood pellets, so it would save the step of sterilizing in bags, and would only have to pasteurize (which I preffer)

I also have coconut coir and a hamster bedding package, with wood shavings, maybe I will try mix it up.

Although I suppose that with hardwood the flush would be greater, I will be starting from a spore print, so at first Im only looking for a good specimen to isolate / clone.

Anyway, this it's just an idea, I have to do quite more research on the forum about what can be pasteurized and what needs to be sterilized (pretty noob in this particular subject)

Things that can be pasteurized are those which are like wood or straw, not dense in protein and nitrogen. more examples are woodchips, nut shells, cardboard/paper, sugar cane bagasse, etc.

higher nutrient substrates and amendments require sterilization, like grains, bran, alfalfa, soy hulls.

You can have success treating king oysters just like regular oysters. follow Oyster straw or sawdust pasteurization teks. Even lipas fuel pellet "pasteurization" works for kings.

So... I will try to mix some of those ingredients and pasteurize them.

Thank you guys~ I will check out those teks

PD: About fruitting, I suposse thats better to top-fruit them, not like regular oysters, right?
