Just found this growing in the backyard..what species is it?
    #2702314 - 05/19/04 04:53 PM (19 years, 8 months ago)

We live in the northern part of illinois, and it just rained a few days ago. Its about 2.5 inches tall, and has a vanilla white color to it. The cap is a little over an inch in diameter. It doesnt have a distinct odor to it. The Stem is firm, and im not sure about the spore print yet.

II. Accurate mushroom descriptions

It is critical that you describe mushrooms fully and accurately in order to get a proper identification.

A good picture of the mushrooms is invaluable.

Along with the pictures (if possible), please include the following:

a. Habitat (where [state/province/country] and what does it grow on)
b. Characteristics of the gills (color, attached/not, gills/pores, etc)
c. Measurements of cap and stem.
d. Characteristics of the stem (color, texture, hollow/solid, thin/thick, etc)
e. Characteristics of the cap (color, texture, conical/spherical, convex/concave, etc)
f. Spore print color (very important!)
g. Color that the mushroom bruises
h. Scent of mushroom

I already included that information, but ill say it again:

-Northern Part of Illinois, in USA
-Its about 2.5 inches tall,
-and has a vanilla white color to it.
-The cap is a little over an inch in diameter.
-It doesnt have a distinct odor to it.
-The Stem is firm,

-Just checked the print i was making of the cap and the spores dropped are a very light brownish color.

The only things I did not add were that the gills are attatched underide of the cap, and are a brownish color. And from it looks like, the mushroom bruises the same color it originally was, a vanilla white.

Not Conocybe, it looks like Agrocybe praecox(sp?)... not active, not worth eating.

Why do you keep misidentifying species.

Obviously you do not know what you are talking about. I have now seen several posts made by you where you suggest mushrooms species that are incorrect id's.

First, the name Conocybe means Cono (Cone) cybe (face or head) from the Latin meaning cone head. That mushroom in the picture has a flat cap. Not conic.

Second,
Conocybe species have cinnamon to ochraceous orange colored gills, not brown as seen in the above image posted by the author of this thread.

Here Are some images of Conocybe species of mushrooms/

This one I photographed a few days ago at the UW campus. The caps have changed colors in the sun yet I flipped one over to show the cinnamon colored gills of Conocybe.

While two species of Conocybe are psilocybian, they also contain one deadly poisonous species so I gennerally advise people to not hunt for the Conocybe.

The UW picture. The caps were cinnamon until hygophanous stepped in and they faded to white in the sun.

Another two images. One is of a cap and the gills of a Conocybe

And in this third picture from Thailand, A couple of Psilocybe cubensis in the foreground, one lone white capped Copelandia cyanescens to the right of the center and a whole colony of Conocybe tenara all fruiting in the same habitat towards the bottom of the image..

And one picture of Conocybe from a clercut last fall in Kingston towwards the Hood River region.

So please refrain form idying mushrooms if you have no idea what you are talking about.

Mj
