So about these Shroomery-sponsored grow kits.....
    #27046663 - 11/19/20 01:11 AM (3 years, 2 months ago)

First of all, let me say I have zero intention of buying a grow kit, so for the love of all things beautiful, please don't misread my post and try to convince me not to get one.

My confusion is this:

After making the mistake of starting with a kit myself a few months ago, I came here and learned that that was dumb and ended up tossing the pump/humidifier and making a SGFC like literally everyone here- including all the top dog mods- have been telling guys that made my same mistake to do for years.

I've seen a hundred different posts now by established and trusted growers saying that grow kits/ digital automation are pointless and expensive compared to homemade FCs made to spec.

It's repeated ad nauseam, and after learning more, the reasoning is sound.

So why tf are there ads for expensive grow kits all over the goddamned site?

I almost bought one when I first signed up because I thought I had just cheaped out on a shitty kit and just needed to switch to the official shroomery-approved one.

Am I tripping or confused or misunderstandimg something here?

Is the mushroomcube actually a viable method thats different from other kits that I've been told to avoid like the plague?

Although I've been wondering what the diff between admins and mods is for a couple days and I may have just figured it out.

Anyways, thats my 2am perplexity.

As always, I hope I didnt come across as rude. Love y'all.

✌😁🤘

The bottom line with the sponsors is...well... the bottom line.  :stoned:  Having ad revenue from sites that market applicable products for the subset of the population that peruses the boards is a relationship that works for everyone (save for people wasting time and money on kits, of course...).  It's a necessary part of operations.  Much of what the vendors that market their wares here sell is stuff that can be used sensibly.  The kits are the notable exception.  Some people just absolutely can not wrap heads around proper cultivation techniques,  sterile technique,  numbers and values,  etc., but want to grow some fruits for the head stash.  Doesn't make it a smart option given the wide array of methods to achieve greater success both in the immediate and the long term, but it's something people are going to do rather they buy kita here or on IG or reddit or wherever.  It's like buying any other premade package of goods that there is a more cost effective and sensible way to go about (there are countless examples of this at our local box stores).  Automation in kits is absolutely foolhardy because conditions and decisions made along the way are going to vary from person to person and house to house and room to room.  There's no magic kit that can do everything right for everyone.  Add to that old, soggy grain bags and pasteurized sub that's been sitting around and in transit forever and someone who doesn't know shit about what they are looking at/for, and you have a rainbow of ways things can and do go wrong.  You're not going to see Target or Bed and Bath advertising here.  I think it's frankly amazing that this site offers freely a veritable army of growers ready to steer people from kits that provide revenue for businesses that pay the site to advertise.  There's also a part to this that people don't say out loud very often: people reading flashy banners and clicking custom kit ads before reading the voluminous yet indispensable info on the sticky threads get... I don't want to say... what they ask for (not quite what I mean,  but you get the point).  It's practically a rite of package for a lot of folks.  Buy the kit, learn your lesson,  and read "all that stuff" one seemed overwhelmed by before. Kind of a weird proving ground of sorts.  There is a huge quantity of good stuff offered by the sponsors and I have purchased items from some of them without regret because I want to support them and the Shroomery.  But yeah... kits are a schtick for people who just don't want to do the reading and do a little work.  It's a good question,  and I'm surprised I don't see it asked more often.

Thanks for the response man, that pretty much sums it up.

It's basically the answer I was assuming, I guess I just had to get it out there that it was rubbing me the wrong way, since sponsorships are supposed to be an endorsement of a quality product, and it just seems irresponsible to endorse bad technology for a paycheck, given the entire mission statement of this website.

Let's also play devil's advocate here and look at some of the psychology here.

The initial barrier to starting seems daunting/insurmountable for many - and for many, they can't wrap their heads around what's needed. Combine that with - where do I start - what if I'm wrong fears; it makes a good entry position to get people into the hobby. Some people are lucky enough to have others around them who can help them hold their hands, and get them going.

The grow kits provide that single point investment "getting everything they need" and gets them pointed in the right direction - once they actually "do the work" and get over that initial hurdle, most will continue with the hobby and then come to regret their money sink.

For new growers - push them to do the work and research on their own - let them know that the kits are a huge markup and mostly a waste of money - but at the same time, understand that in this day and age, having a pre-packaged "kit" is a great way to get others into the process and start their learning experience.

You hear a TON of people knocking the kits, but be honest, how many of those who are knocking the kits got their start with one of those (and are just trying to prevent others from going down the bad money hole)?

You're absolutely right, that's exactly what happened to me, and it DID produce some meager fruit, enough to give me the confidence that Yes, I am physically and mentally capable of cultivating mushrooms, and just need to learn and practice and learn and practice.

Woah, super run-on sentence lol.

But yeah, I guess they all provide the basics necessary to convert into a proper FC of your choosing as well once you start reading the things.

So yeah, I definitely see things in a different light now. I just wish I hadn't been so impatient and hit the forums BEFORE I got the kit.

Jesus, my entire view on the growing process was so vastly different just 4 months ago.

Good to be here and learning from mine and everyone else before me's mistakes.

Yeah I dont think growkits are all that bad. Or as the previous poster said a grow kit, like the first grow ever and then thats it. Of course not the whole money sink hole thing.

Second that, I myself just started with a grow kit and with the help of this forum I have learned and applied a lot on it and so far I'm pretty thrilled and proud. See my results here

From this point on I can go with agar and LI and therefore inoculate BRF and grains.

So basically buying the kit was just lowering the (kinda overwhelming) entry barrier in this great hobby

*edit: btw. it actually was a growkit of a sponsor*

The cultivation mods don't run or host the site or it would probably be different.

Finance magazines have advertisements for services the context of their articles would teach you to avoid

Yeah that's what I was getting at when I said I think I realized the diff between mods and admins whilst considering this. After lurking around and having a few interactions with you and some of the others, It felt very unlike a decision you guys would have made for the site.
