starting a monotub? Any advice or guidance?

Hi everyone! I have been trying pf tek for a while now and I feel like I always get small yields or most of the jars that I inoculate end up contaminate with only a few that actually grow. I wanted to try a monotub, but I do not know what the stages are to get a monotub started. Do I begin by ordering spore syringes and making agar plates? Then what. Any advice would be much appreciated!

https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/22337800 Search button is your friend My advice if you’re just beginning is to just go MS to probs BRF and just spawn it from there... or if you’re feeling adventurous go for it and get some agar plates and transfer to grain! Don’t do MS to grain, it’s a crapshoot. Welcome to bulk. Cheers!
Edit: Bobs Unmodified doesn’t mention BRF but I would assume it could be substituted for the grains...

MS to grain doesn’t have to be a crapshoot, it just needs different conditions than grain inoculated from a clean source. Absolutely go the agar route if it’s an option but if MS to grain is the best you can do it can definitely work. I’ve inoculated easily over 200 grain jars from MS syringe and never had one contaminate

ohhh okay!! So I am just slightly confused on this part. Agar is when the mycelium grows on a plate but how is the agar introduced to a spawn? And can bird seed mix be used as a spawn?

You can cut a wedge of the mycelium and transfer it to grains. Or make a liquid culture. Bird seed can totally be used as spawn I believe. Cheers!

Yes, wild bird seed, WBS, is a grain spawn. A lot of people here prefer things like rye or wheat berries due to lower contamination rates, but I’ve had plenty of success with WBS.
Once you’ve made a couple transfers of your agar plates to make sure the mycelium is clean and contaminant free, you put the plate with some prepared and sterilized jars of grain into your still air box (which you used to make your agar plates) and simply cut the agar into big wedges and drop them into the grain jars.
Search on YouTube for “let’s grow mushrooms agar” and there should be a series of videos showing you the proper steps, though he uses a flow hood instead of a still air box

Here is a list of easy to follow teks for everything from building a still air box to transferring from agar to preparing substrate to setting up a monotub and lots more

Where have you heard this? As far as I know they all have equal contamination rates if you prepare them properly. Most people just prefer one over the other due to differences in preparation time and method, and how this balances with the speed of growth. wbs can be tricky to prepare but if you do it properly it grows fast.
I could be wrong though I just haven't heard that before

I only use WBS, and I’ve never had a jar contaminate, so I agree it works well. But it’s because of this that it stands out to me when people say it contaminates easily, and I’ve noticed it quite a bit. Idk how many TCs say it or anything, I just know I’ve seen it said a lot
