Growing Oysters at home Questions/Request
    #27044448 - 11/17/20 07:22 PM (3 years, 2 months ago)

So I am dialing in my Oyster mushroom game. Im currently trying djamor and polmonarius.

I have a few shelves with a humidifier and fan draped in painters plastic as a fruiting chamber.

Im doing 1lb spawn to ~5lbs bags of cold pasteurized straw, so 6 bags of each type each week. Most of the bags seem to (and I want them to) pin in a week.

All the prep is the same every week with very little variables; but, im getting unpredictable fruiting times. I can deal with a little difference, but some are way off from the rest.

* How can I dial this in?
*Should consolidation be in the dark somewhere so when moved to fruiting there is a larger difference in the environment? I currently consolidate on a shelf.

**Even more importantly, is anyone willing to start PM's for all the questions Im going to be coming up with? Im growing for a Chef and am really looking for more consistency. Any help would be greatly appreciated

What's your temperature difference between inoculation and fruiting area?

What is the actual humidity swing within your "fruiting chamber"?
Lighting shouldn't be that big of a factor in incubation/consolidation.

Before you "dial it in" you need to be sure what your "constants" are too determine what needs dialing in.

Could it be temp fluctuations thru the spawn run?

Can you elaborate on your cold pasteurization technique?

I would guess it is a colonization temp issue. I had issues of inconsistent colonization until I build a colonization room. I keep the room at 72F and now my issues are solved. All my blocks fruit within a day of each other.

Sorry I wasnt more prompt in this. I feel like I have a million things to do. anyways..

So the consolidation is happening at about 72-73F, might get down to 68F at night. It is indoors with windowlight throughout the day.

The fruiting chamber is staying above 90% humidity with a Vicks Cool Mister In the center of the shelves. A small fan circulates the air on one of the shelves.

It is basically the ambient temperature of the rest of the building, maybe plus a degree or two at times.

Man, I totally get the "dialing it in" part. At this point Im most comfortable with the clean spawn, pasteurization (cold water, lime, chopped straw, 12-18hrs or so. Outside Temps just dipped to the 50sF), ratios, and consistent bag weights, etc.

Thank you so much for the offer to help!!

:takingnotes: Hmmm. very interesting. do you just move from the Consolidation room to fruiting after a week?

What is your fruiting chamber temp?

Im using the polytubing with holes to make 5-6lbs blocks. If that matters rather than filter bags

What is the ambient temperature in the fruiting room? Ideally your colonization area would be slightly warmer than your fruiting chamber, as Shrooms said if your colonization room doesn't stay a constant, warmer temp than your fruiting room it would cause inconsistency in your fruiting chamber, because well there's no "definite shift" in environmental conditions.

Example, my colonization room stays between 72-74, my fruiting tent is 66-68 and it seems to work ok!

Is the problem that the fruiting time is too different between batches or too variable within a batch? I too am thinking that some temperature is not under control. It could be that the sub is too cold when you inoculate, especially with the more tropical djamor.

You dont say.. Hm..

I actually did not think of the temperature AT inoculation time. It is not super consistent now.

However, I did try something new with air exchange. For colonization I only used very small holes. Then as the myc built up around said holes, I opened them up at each spot the following week. That initiated pins right where and when I wanted them.:dancer:

But seeing as this is the first time I have done this, It doesnt provide a ton of information until I can repeat it.

Also, still working on a consolidation chamber, in the dark, and of a different steady temperature BEFORE moving to fruiting each week. :superscience:
