Re: Infant Antibiotic Exposure is significantly associated with several childhood-onset health conditions, including autism, ... [Re: lowbrow]

A little logical extrapolation led me to think... well if autism was truly associated with childhood antibiotic use I'll look at where autism is occurring most. Dirt poor countries, which have low antibiotic and vaccination prevalence, can have many autistic diagnoses or few. No correlation. Then I got thinking about how autism is on the rise, and found that people being diagnosed with retardation is dropping at a similar rate to which autistic diagnoses is rising, and it is being tested for more, and the requirement for diagnoses had been largely reduced. Even between states in the US autism rates can halve or double. This is correlated as well with additional resources that are assigned for autistic children.

The study looked at a group of people that 70% of them had taken antibiotics. So they are comparing 70% to 30% of a group? That doesn't make for good statistics.

With some of the conditions they were researching the participants were less likely to experience them if they had taken antibiotics 3-4 times over 1-2, or even >5 times over 3-4. This is indicating the data has no real association.

Antibiotic use and obesity is a piss weak association, we all know what makes kids fat.

The highest rates of asthma are in Australia, New Zealand and the UK. Maybe we can associate how nations who eat fish and chips most are most likely to get asthma as children. If we put it in a table there will be obvious association.

Again I feel much the same as I did the first time I read this study. Seems like bullshit science. It itself even admits it's not causal evidence in its summary.

The one bit of data in the study that was significant was an >8% increase incidence of celiac disease in children who had used antibiotics as infants. Not only does that make sense but it's verifiable with further study, and can possibly turn into actual treatment of early onset disease. They were fools not to present that significant data as the primary finding.

Obviously there is no causative relationship established here, it isn't a controlled trial. The data is still reasonably compelling. We've never done controlled trials to "prove" that cigarettes "cause" cancer, but we have extremely compelling correlational data to indicate that it's the case.

People who are predisposed to cancer probably have an unconscious, DNA, genetic memory, mitochondrial RNA deep, cosmic awareness of that fact without realizing it and are drawn to smoking to take the edge off, dude. You're talking pseudo science here.

saying cigarettes cause cancer is nothing more than an unproven conspiracy theory.
