alright MA&L, i thought it would be a convenient to get a centralized thread of album recommendations, jazz discussion, and random shit associated with it. Come here and post if you are diggin a song, etc, spread the jazz love Ive become totally taken with this music in the past month. I?ve always loved music, but this is a whole new kind of love for me, it totally speaks to me whenever i listen to it. Im so thankful for being introduced, so lets spread the love. First things first, im gonna request an album recommendation for Gerry Mulligan. I have a weird comp cd of his work, but im interested in finding a great recording. Any Rec?s on Cannonball Adderly records? Ive been thinkin of picking up a Mingus recording, but im not sure which one to go for, also. This is what i?ve been listening to for the past month:
Miles Davis - Kind Of Blue
Miles Davis - Birth of the Cool
Workin? with the miles davis quintet
John Coltrane - A Love Supreme
Ken Burns Jazz - Dave Brubeck
Ken Burns Jazz - Charlie Parker
Ken Burns Jazz - Lester Young Lester Young - Tenor King Dizzy Gillespie, Sarah Vaughn & Charlie Parker - Radio Sessions (Laserlight) Charlie Parker - All Stars Live @ The Royal Room (laserlight) Dizzy Gillespie - Bebop Professor Gerry Mulligan - Mulligan (lasterlight) Various other random laserlight recordings i dont want to look for right now :P I just added these to my collection with a recent order:
Steamin? with the miles davis quintet
Relaxin? with the miles davis quintet
John Coltrane - Giant Steps
Modern Jazz Quartet - Django Thats it, but growing constantly --Kremlin

As far as Gerry Mulligan goes I have only one of his CDs but I would recommend it to anyone who loves jazz; What is There To Say?

I get into jazz guitarist more than anything, I'll stick to recommending what I'm listening to at this time, Larry Coryell (especially his version of "Yesterdays" which is very relaxed and dreamlike) and Jimmy Bruno (Night Mist in particular).

Wynton Marsalis Live at the Village Vanguard.
It is a 7 cd set for $30 at places like Best Buy. It is what got me interested in jazz in the first place.

So you like jazz. Mingus and Monk are two of my absolute favourites. They have some seriously fucked up trippy blue music minds...but in a really good way.
Check out this shit...
Two of the "best" (IMHO), that he recorded for Riverside
Brilliant Corners

Monk's Music

You have to be open to fully appreciate Monk. Coltrane plays on Monk's Music; there a famous point when you hear Monk shout "Coltrane! Coltrane!" to bring in Coltrane; legend has it that Coltrane was so smacked out that he was fallin asleep during the session. You can't tell from the solo though; and some people just say they hadn't worked out the soloing order prior to starting the take. Coltrane did a lot of good shit with Monk, they really played off each other. They've got another album called "Monk and Coltrane" or summat which is well worth checking out.
Now for Charlie:
Mingus Ah Um

The Black Saint and the Sinner Lady

If you like Kind of Blue or A Love Supreme ckeck out these. And the Monk ones too of course There's a gem of an album called "Mingus Plays Piano"; Mingus wasn't a practiced pianist, but it's just him messing about at a piano in quite a light hearted way. And it beats a lot of other jazz piano albums I've heard...
And as far as Miles Davis is concerned, two of the most important albums in the history of jazz are:
In A Silent Way... a total chillout album, one of my favourite pieces of music in any genre. Smooth electric pianos support Miles soft playing, great bass and drums too. Can't remember how many times I've put this on after a heavy smoking party and just fallen asleep to it!
Bitches Brew... Fusion Funk Jazz Rock in a way no-one else has ever envisaged. Need to listen to it.
These are just a few of my favourite albums. I really only listen to jazz of the 50s and after, from be-bop on, I'm not really into the big-band era and swing stuff.

Lately I've been listening to some James Carter. Sax player, really cool stuff. Two songs I recommend are "Tricotism" and "Don's Idea", you won't be disappointed.

I got into jazz a couple years ago, and the first albums I got were Miles Davis' "Live Evil (Selim Sivad Evil)" and Thelonious Monk's "Live at the Jazz Workshop". As for the Monk album, I like it when I'm relaxing and it's late and dark. Just sends me off into a different time. Now, the Miles album, that's probably my best buy ever, and I'm not only talking about music. It's just one of the things I'm most glad I ever discovered. It's really funky, and there's a really great guitarist on it, man! And there wasn't even supposed to be guitars on the album, that's something someone desided about a week before the album was recorded (if my memory serves me right). About half of the album is recorded live, half in studio. When I sometimes can't tell the difference it makes me understand what amazing musicians these are. It's a double album, really worth cheking out. It's in the vein of Bitches Brew, btw, I saw someone mentioning it. Oh, here's the cover. I think it's awesome, and it's one of the reasons I got it.
