Storing agar plates and slants (Fridge vs Wine cooler?)
    #27043908 - 11/17/20 01:39 PM (3 years, 2 months ago)

Hi

I tried to use the search for this, but couldn't really get the information I was looking for.

I've started my agar adventure and absolutely love it! So much that that my vegetable box in my fridge is almost full (It's a small box) - I would like to separate it from my food and avoid the constant opening of the fridge as much as possible.

I've been looking for some mini-fridge and also heard people mention wine coolers. What would you guys recommend? Wine coolers doesn't get as cool as a fridge, but I also don't want to freeze my plates.

I've also heard some unfortunate stores about fridges that all of the sudden was filled with water. I definitely don't want to ruin my soon-to-be agar collection.

Anything I should be looking out for?

I have an "all fridge" compact refrigerator. It's like a dorm fridge basically but there is no freezer so there is no auto defrost function that cycles on and off. This is supposed to be a major cause of condensation in your stored agar plates. (due to the high temp swings)

For the first time in my life every plate I've put in there for storage hasn't developed any condensation whatsoever. I have been keeping the majority of them also inside a small lunch bag to further prevent any temperature swings that happen when opening the fridge door, but, even some plates that didn't fit in the lunch bag still have no condensation 2 months later.

I think it was RR who I initially saw suggest to go this route. It works really great. I have no idea if a wine cooler has any other advantages but I imagine they don't save you much money and likely have less room that's ideal for storage.

I paid around $200 for mine on amazon. It's a danby.

Although my wine refrigerator seems to have less condensation, I also do not open it as often as my refrigerator.

My recommendation is to go with a fridge because wine coolers are heavy as fuck and cost more.

I had a used "Dorm" Fridge I bought for $30 off Craigslist (but had a freezer)  and it would still fill up my plates with water after 3-5 months.

To remedy this I started storing my plates upside down.

Since then, I bought a higher quality mini refrigerator (with a separated freezer) from Costco and my plates have little to no moisture 4-5 months in.

If you want the best long term storage situation, slants will store the best.

Put them in a lunchbox to minimize temp swings.

What temp do you keep it?

I have a wine cooler that I don’t use too much , I was planning to store poured unused plates there. The lower temp is around 12 C (53 F)

Coming back to this one. I keep reading lots of different opinions regarding mini fridge. I would rather put in a little extra and get something good, than having to loose all my agar stuff.

My food fridge is out of the question. There is just not any room.

Are there any manufactures, or fridge that any of you have come across that's worth the money and can keep the temperature stable?

I also had a Danby all fridge model to store my cultures inside launch bags with gel packs and was working great, no condensation, steady 38ºF inside the launch bag, sadly recently it broke. Which model is yours?
