Is it that the ground didn't reach the same temperature as the ambient air?

absolutely.

i have conducted conclusive experiments that prolonged freezing of cube mycelia (defined as a maintained substrate temperature of <30F prolonged for >2hrs) imposes cell-wall disruption damage that paralyzes it or at the very least greatly impairs its ability to both continue digestion (imagine your stomach burst open) and to combat contaminants (imagine your skin ripped off).

I thought it worth mentioning that the experiments were conducted to determine the lowest acceptable temperature for long term spawn storage. While I was at it I thought it wise to test for short-term freezing effects as well.

Also, if the spawn failed after an exposure of 1 hour then all subsequent exposure times were assumed to be failures as well.

Ive dunked a cake before and had it frozen for aprox. 24 hours. The mycelium survived and after 3 weeks the second flush appeared.
