Is tomentose mycelium bad?
    #27043246 - 11/17/20 03:33 AM (3 years, 2 months ago)

So iv'e been looking for information on this but haven't really been able to find a clear ansver.

Some people say that tomentose mycelium produces fewer fruits compared to rizomorphic, and they usually link to some Mush cultivation book from 1986 or something by some guy named Paul.

Thing is, a lot of other people call that outdated information. So wich one is it? Does it matter at all?

I know people like to isolate rizo growth on agar, so i guess there must be a reason behind this, or?

Cool, do you maybe wanna take the time to elaborate? Since ur a TC im probably not wrong to assume that you have encountered tomentose mycelium before and got experience with it.

To my understanding, Rizo myc kinda works like a highway for the mycelium network, kinda exploring the substrate/agar looking for food and sending signals back that it's cool to keep colonizing here.

While tomentose myc comes when the substrate is very nutricious (maybe to much even) and therefor has no need to "string" out like the rizo, and therefor also colonizes slower.

Also, i read somewhere that rizo myc form more hyphal knots, wich again turns to pins. Is this true in your experience?

Pins grow from both rizo and tomentose myc, this phenomena is probably the most 'not a factor' thing when it comes to fruiting so just focus on achieving healthy looking myc, that's the one that's best suited for fruit production always  whether you're  cloning fruits by transferring random invitro pins from agar plates or in other ways are selecting parts of culture for inoculation or whatever for that matter, always just focus on selecting the most healthy looking parts and you'll be good

This is the same clone culture looking all different on different agar recipes.
It even displays both aggressive rizo growth and really whispy tomentose myc on the same plate growing right next to each other  and this plate pinned without issues all over the plate.
