Do you pasturize vermiculite?

Hi, I was using the bucket tek for a cubensis substrate mix of coco and vermiculite. It seems to give mixed results, but would this more likely be attributable to spawn?
Thanks

Mold spores are easily killed off. Bacteria need a good ass kicking. The only time I add vermiculite to a sub is if I overwatered it and need something to balance it out. Dry stuff (vermicultite) added to wet stuff (in this case coir) =less wet stuff. Vermiculite is not really a priority in the sub prep recipe. Some people always add it but it has been proven to not make much if any difference. BTW, vermiculite is pretty much sterile out of the bag. The very process of making it consists of exploding minerals at super high temperatures which makes the flakes, thus sterilzing it.
Anyway, when you pasteurize the coir, verm or not, it is mucho important that you hold the temperatures high for the recommended time. I don't use the tek that you are talking about, so I can't recommend methods, but if your tek says X amount of minutes than don't do X minus amounts of minutes because you think that's good enough, that should do it lol !
I can't tell you how many times I have had conversations with people who think they know better than killer growers, some of them down right savages in the mush grower community lol! Maybe somebody who does the tek you are talking about will chime in with some good pointers. Good luck!

Dang, I forgot to answer the 2nd part of your question . clean spawn is the single most important thing other than agar work that you can do. Get clean spawn and you can even just top fruit your jars if you wanted to (smaller yield than a bulk sub though). But if you have dirty spawn it will eventually crawl up your leg and bite you in the arse, regardless of anything you do afterwards.

Ok, thanks for those thoughts π. Might investigate. Just out of interest I was wondering if anyone have compared substrates vs yield for cubies?

Bleh!!! Cubies grown on horse poo are the same as those grown on cow poo as the same as grown on worm poo (worm castings) as the same as grown on wheat, rye, oats grain etc. ... The nutes that mushies need to harbor the magic stuff or just grow to be macho looking despite their size has nothing to do with their nutrient base. the only good thing that happens from increasing nutrients is that you are at greater risk for contams . Believe me, this is all long ago and far away .

Quick note, there are varying ideas on coir prep.
I used to fastidiously "pasteurize" my coir substrate. Now I don't bother with it at all. Just properly hydrate. Clean spawn is the #1 concern regarding contams, by far. It took me many years before I realized this, through experience. It seems that the general consensus around here has also evolved in that regard, which is reassuring. Of course, always adjust any info. that you read to fit your circumstances as necessary.
Happy spawnin'
