Entertain my thoughts on this potentially awesome idea :)
    #27040989 - 11/15/20 05:37 PM (3 years, 3 months ago)

I'll start with saying that I have been growing gourmets for awhile now and I am totally happy with the procedure I use. However I cant stop thinking about this idea and wanted to just get some feedback on it. Disclaimer: this is absolutely ONLY for fellow home growers who are running extremely small operations with 23qt PC's.

Ok so here it is, I know its debateable whether or not supplementation is necessary with HWFP, but I do prefer to use supps so this only refers to growing with supp + hwfp blocks.

Has anyone ever considered ONLY pressure cooking your supplement? Here's what Im thinking. I can PC 5 "2 qt" jars filled with soy hulls at a time, then transfer them to pasteurized filter bags with hwfp. This would allow for much more hwfp bags to be prepared pwr PC cycle, and would also save bags as no bags would ever have to enter the pressure cooker. Yes it adds an extra step bc you have to add the PCd supplement to your pasteurized bags but it could potentially be worthwhile. You could sterilize enough supplement in a 23qt PC to make 8 "5lb" bags of masters mix instead of 4 at a time when you premix.. effectively doubling your output. Maybe Im crazy but it seems like something thats worth a try. Thoughts?

Not doubting the concept of your idea, certainly try it!,but have to point out the obvious that you're exposing your sterile supplement to more contamination sources by this technique.  Simply put, sterilizing a highly nutritious supplement like sbh then exposing it twice as much to mix it with your substrate/spawn will more than likely result in more trouble than sterilizing it premixed with your wood source.

I think as soon as you added a sterile ingredient to a pasteurized substrate you would end up with some sort of contamination.

i remember someone kicking around the idea of adding fully colonized supplementation pucks to pasteurized substrate..

the way i understand it you could increase your spawn ratio to get the same amount of nutrients as supplementing.

:whathesaid: If you want to go that route just spawn heavy. The sterilized
supplement will give  you trouble adding to pasteurized sawdust

Nice thanks for the advice! Just wanted to get some expert opiniona on it. Sounds like it's not such a great idea after all haha.

What if you colonized the sterile supplements first and then mixed it with the pasteurized sub?

Yeah thats what quadman is saying. Colonizing the supplement would just be a waste of time when you can just boost your spawn ratio and use your grain as your primary nutrition source. At least that's what Im understanding.

That's the jist of it.  And honestly I've gotten away with 20% soy bean hulls in open air inoculation with oyster and lion's mane!
All be it I supplemented high with 2/3 to a full quart of spawn depending what I had to use.  In a 5lb bag. But it worked with very few lost bags!

Grains are nutrient rich, we use them for spawn for many inoculation points. They have to be sterile to colonize and not contaminate.

Any supplement be it soy hulls, bran or whatever. If these supplements are sterilized and colonized ,then basically these are then spawn.

Get it ,you are describing the same exact process. The supplements downfall is they won't break up into the numerous inoculation points.
