Do you monitor rh? I'm wondering if the overlay is from too humid of an environment.
I'm sure everyone has noticed that if you mist the overlay the water just beads off. I've concluded in my own mind that the overlay is a shield. I just don't know what it's shielding the mycelial body from. Too much humidity? I ran my tray with a really high humidity (95%) and it overlayed like none I've seen in this thread with one "cloud" overreaching the tray so much that it hung down past the lip of the tray.
I think aka is on to something about myc selection but I don't know enough about what you selected or if anything

I believe it’s a combination of humidity, and needing more FAE.
For shits and giggles, I tossed the one I flipped (marshmallow top) into my gourmet test Martha. This is setup for oysters and hericium. So high humidity as well as tons of fresh air. Around 6 exchanges an hour. I have quite a few pins, and no more fluffy growth. This is one shoebox, with one culture. I will be spawning several different quarts to different subs this weekend and get them going.
I think they key is to allow full colonization in the tub, and then as soon as you get that, it needs massive amounts of FAE. I could be wrong, but I tend on finding out.

**Also, Alan for sequencing back, and it’s not a cube.

That’s about what we thought, closely related but not the same.
Awesome. Now we just need to find out if it’s related to anything else for clues on how to grow it.
Based on those wild shots I’m guessing leaf litter is a good start.

Yeah. I agree. The tub above went into straight coir. Which doesn’t mean much. But it definitely needs something. Has anyone tried just a standard casing? Or jiffy? I have a bag or two somewhere so I might give it a shot. But the substrate is the one I’m curious about. Also, conditions. I think it doesn’t do well without massive amounts of fresh air while maintaining decent humidity. Puzzling for sure. I have seven different Nat jars ready to go. I am pasteurizing sub right now, and making some more coir sub for it as well. Any ideas, feel free to let me know.

Man, I’m excited. As soon as I saw this block come in with a decent pin set, it was game over. That was a literal half ass attempt with less than a half quart of spawn. Zero effort lol. I’m going to push the rest of my active stuff off for a few weeks while I work on these. I have faith we can figure it out.
Also, forgot to mention. Everyone saying this takes a month. The above cake is now 8 days old. So from spawn to lions was less than one week

Low spawn seemed to help when I did it.
I’m curious if those knots all mature though, I’ve had a bunch of subs knot/primordia up like that and then either stop or stay an inch tall.
I bet the couple different genes are altering it to feed on decayed plant stuff instead of manure heavy subs. It would be so cool to know how to sequence and read all that stuff.

Yeah, I think the low spawn, with how aggressive this mycelium is, seems to help.
And I’m also curious to see how they do. I just needed to see them pin and knot without the overlay first lol. I won’t be disappointed if they end up aborting or staying small. I hope they don’t, but due to the unpredictability of it, I’m not betting anything one way or the other.
What are you thinking for the dead matter? Compost maybe. Straw, compost, coir, and verm. Maybe done invitro?

Thank god you guys are on it lol. I've opened up full FAE on my little shoebox that couldn't

Well that is cool about the DNA analysis... but now my question is ... which one do I have?! I’ve been assuming it is Ps. Natalensis but what if it’s Ps Cubensis var Natal Super Strain?
I put the two sets of spores on agar last night. Actually the Natalensis spores were in a syringe and looked liked they had germinated... The Natal Super Strain was a print so they may take longer to germinate.
While we are waiting... here is that shoe box flush coming along and some mature fruits I harvested showing zero signs of a veil!

Those look natalensis to me. Now if the nss looks identical well really be screwed lol.
Well have to get prints from verified natalensis fruits and redistribute them while simultaneously renaming nss to end the confusion.

Little update. These guys are still growing. No overlay. The overlay that was moved to the bottom is popping out some mushrooms too. But I’m leaving them on the bottom because it appears an alright pin set is coming through. Slowly but surely.
So running 92-97 humidity, between 19-23 degrees and with about 6 exchanges per hour on the air.

Ok. Let's see how this goes.

PS. This is my first time working with agar, so my confidence level isn't all that high.
