Cyans in PA (confirmed w/ microscopy)

Found what I'm 99.9% sure are cyans today. Initially I thought they were voids so I didn't really bother to take good habitat pics but upon later examination I have determined them to be cyans. I will go back for better pics when I get a chance. Not sure if I stumbled upon someone's personal grow, or of they are spreading around the area. Almost all of them were blackened from the cold, I collected the best specimens, and left some pins. Was not looking for mushrooms at all when I found these. Just looked down and there they were. Sorry for the extra large pics, I hope they make identification easier.

They have much more red caps than the ovoids I find here and the gills are a distinct orange color. The bluing is also more of a dark, ocean blue than the lighter baby blue bruising of ovoids. May be worth mentioning they dont taste or smell like ovoid

They were in the city, so the spores could have easily traveled to colonize new beds, dont think they were being cultivated because none of them had been picked. Possible they are all over the north side of Pittsburg.

Cool find for sure . Get ahold of Rockefeller and see if he can give a confirmation. A few years ago I was sure I had cyans even though I have no experience with them. Alan got a sample and confirmed they were voids. Here's a few pics

Hope yours are I'll be on lookout for them now.

I was afraid of this, ovoids are highly variable so it's hard to ssy for sure, maybe I can do some microscopy. Snuck back for some more pictures and to collect some mycelium. Aside from the physical differences the biggest tell for me is the lack of the distinct ovoid smell I have become so used to.

Congrats on the find. We're these found in ordinary hardwood mulch? Northside eh. I'm not too far from there gonna have to start looking for naturalised cyans now.

Despite the snow I decided to follow my gut feeling that they must be spreading around the area, I checked some nearby parks and they seemed to be fully colonized, maybe we will get some spring fruits. I blended up all the crispy frozen ones and been spraying them everywhere I go. Gonna see these in mass next few years the climate is perfect for them here.

Found some more in a different spot, I will post some pics when I get a chance. This confirms my assumption they are spreading here by spores and mulch distribution.

Cool! Mount a gill edge of the cyans and record the shape of the cheliocystidia if possible.

Someone sent me some Psilocybe cyanescens from Tennessee recently.

Were they found close to the Mississippi river?

I wonder how they initially got there? Cyans should readily naturalize in other areas as it's a wood lover and pretty hardy.

Here are my shots of the gill edges. Think I need a better scope this one only goes up to 500x.

Hi Shroomhunts, what an interesting find!! It's difficult to see the shape of the cheilocystidia (partially the magnification as you suggest). Have you tried mounting your gill edge in a dilute solution of KOH (2-3%)? That can help to clear away extraneous debris (fungal and otherwise) that interfere with the view.

I will give it a go, trying to get my hands on a better scope this one is roughly 50years old and has definitely seen better days.

I hear you Shroomhunts. I have an ancient one, an east German Zeiss...fantastic quality but it has a lot of problems and I just don't have the skills or time to fix it.
