How long after swabbing the agar should I see some growth (even the smallest amount)?

About 7 days or so, sometimes earlier sometimes later
Can take upto 2 weeks though

Yeah, they could end up not germinating atall.
There's things you can do to make sure you have the best chances though like having fresh spores, good sterile tech, good inoculation methods.

Softer agar is sometimes necessary to get spore swab off a print to germinate at all. I usually mix  up a batch of agar 6 to 7g agar per 500ml water to get spores to germinate a little better, instead of the standard 10g/500ml.
