Adding PH buffers to mash VS boil

Has anyone used PH buffers like gypsum or calcium chloride in thier brews? If so what's your take on adding them to the mash VS the boil kettle? Would adding to the mash compromise the sugar conversion?

They should be added during the mash or to the hot liquor to facilitate correct pH for conversion. But malt is of such high quality these days you probably don't need to at all.

Yeah for home brews I don't bother. I brewed a beer at work though and the recipe called for the buffers to be added to the mash which I found odd. Had a hell of a time achieving the desired gravity. Just curious if the gypsum and cal chlor fucked over the conversion.
