Frankly, using one of your senses, either a mandala/yantra to stare at or music to listen to is inimical to the process of meditation. (Dhyana) which comes after concentration (Dharana), develops following sense-withdrawal (Pratyahara). Samadhi follows Dhyana on this continuum. One is divesting one's awareness of multiplicity of vritttis, (modifications of mind, 'thought-waves' [according to Patanjali]). At best, one is simply enhancing Alpha-wave output or perhaps Theta-waves thereby putting one in a hypnoidal reverie state through listening to music. But blissful as these often feel, they are not conditions of meta-cognition which is what meditation proper is intended to elicit - the awareness of the contents of consciousness. In fact the blissful levels of meditation in the earlier jhanas according to Buddhist teachings are to be superseded by a meditative condition characterized by further clarity, simplicity, stability which is lacking in experiences of bliss. Blissful feeling as you probably realize, comes in 'waves,' rushes, etc., hence modifications of consciousness.

I believe there's a high degree of truth to this.
I've never, ever worked out (exercise in gym), done artwork, writing work, or anything creative or expressive with my body with headphones or music playing, like 99.9% of other people will insist they "need to have on to focus".
To each their own but apart from stuff like aspergers or certain provinces of autism, external stimulation will usually impair focus ability.
Everyone's different though.

*Guy shares meditaion music. *Markos comes through with a jargon laden wall of text about why he doesn't really meditate and to explain his intellectual understanding of an act that is inherently separate from intellect. Never change, Markos.

when I meditate, any encroaching sound is the same as any music - every grunt and fart is as likely as anything to bring on satori.

For me meditation is like deep thorough thinking. Absorbing energies and releasing them.

Eventually at some point, you "hear through" any noises or distraction.
