Getting discouraged in the PNW
    #27039592 - 11/14/20 09:27 PM (3 years, 2 months ago)

Ok shroomery friends...I am in need of words of encouragement. I have been a "forager" for 3 years now. My first find was just 3 wavys. The next year, I stumbled upon a massive patch of wavys by sheer luck whist fishing. It was a good year and I had medicine well into the summer. This year however, I have hunted harder than ever. Checked my old spots multiple times September through now. I have explored tons of new promising territory. So far, for approximately 40 hours of hunting, I have found maybe 1 gram dried.  I don't get it. I see people posting local finds left and right on here and other media outlets. I know I am looking in prime habitat. What gives? Part of me suspects it is a bad year and covid has somehow led to an increase in fellow foragers.

A wise man shepards and propagates his patches.

There is an abundance. Never worry if someone else picked your mushroom, as it is in fact theirs should they have found it at all. Perhaps you caught em between flushes, or perhaps you weren't late and someone else "beat you to it", it was just someone else's time. It will be your time.

Until then.. it is time to prepare. Think back on all of the spots you've looked. Now, single out which spot is the best. By the best I mean wet, shady, out of sight, but still easy enough to get to. Somewhere you'd feel comfortable kneeling, harvesting, and getting back to your car/home without fear of being seen or seeming out of place if you are seen.

Take some wood chips there and place them into the ground to make a patch. Now! Okay not like right now, but make a plan now to do it. Write it down! Get some alder chips and go make a patch. Let nature soak it for you!

Before this season's end, a find will be upon you. Whenever that day comes, propogate it to your pre-laid patch by utilizing stem butts. If you don't know how to do this there are tons of tutorials here on the boards.

If you build it, they will come.

And if you build a patch, they (the mushrooms) will come every year. In your own private spot even, that you can then turn into 2 spots, then 4... Literally endless potential.

Believe. :freewilly:

I've hunted about 40x more terrain than OP and I've found 0g dried so be thankful Haha

Although idk it is a weird year. Hard for me to find them, idk, maybe it's bad timing
