Shoebox Mutation

I'm looking for some criticism on my first shoebox attempt. I'm pretty certain that I've botched it.

I'm using an unmodified shoebox with about one inch of sterilized CVG, cased with verm. I used such a small amount of substrate because I only had 1 bag of Uncle Bens spawn. I started this shoebox 3 weeks ago now.
Everything took off nicely but it seems to have really stalled out, and I got some sort of weird looking mutation growing that can be seen in the second pic.
Roast me. Thanks.

The walls are definitely dry right now but the vermiculite is still wet so I was trying to dry it out a little.
I was kinda thinking that it was too wet because my substrate isn't shrinking and pulling away from the walls at all.

Gave it a lil spritz for good measure. You're probably right.

Idk, maybe it’s a trick of the camera but it looks like if you touched it it would feel like the surface of a basketball, and it looks like the substrate is cracked from dryness

My criticism would be that the tub is probably fooked. You could let it stay around and see what happens but from what I read it didn't have a good start. That is definitely not healthy mycelium. Looks like a dirty bubble lol.
Verm is not a casing material it's used to hold moisture which is great for using in the substrate but not on top. You pretty much have wet non-casing material making it harder for the mycelium to rise towards the top and fruit. There are proper casings that can be pasteurized however coir makes a great casing, just use about 4 qts (is using a 66qt tub) when you are preparing coir/verm and put it on top to make about a 1/4in layer. It just keeps your substrate from dying out.
Uncle Bens tek is shit and yet it always pops up everywhere. Not your fault, it's literally everywhere and people take it as a good start. It's not. You should either try out BRF cakes as a starter or learn how to make and use agar (preferable method) and then put that clean agar to grains.
BRF cakes are a great place to learn technique but agar is easy too, just do a little reading.
Hope you succeed my friend!

Damn I would have sworn I read in the unmodified shoebox tek that I was supposed to put a layer of verm on top and wet it down. I'll give the straight coir a shot when my next spawn in ready.
I've got some BRF Cakes colonizing right now too, and some grain spawn in jars. I'm trying different things for fun and I expected a high failure rate after all of my first uncle bens bags contaminated
