all the meat. I have always appreciated it more than most, but I also have a shitty digestive system that can't deal with chickpeas, lentils, most beans, and as celiac I can't eat gluten (most processed fake meats) while meat has never given me any problems, so it would be pretty challenging for me to ever try and live without meat.
Certainly couldn't do without animal products, as I also eat a lot of eggs

People who don't for moral reasons have an anthropomorphic bias.
Imagine if we had microscopic vision? How many other things would be classify as "meat" that we (even vegans) unwittingly devour currently.

How many trees, plants do u think you have to tear down to build these farms?? not including the deer, birds, squirrels, elk, moose, bear, bees, moles, foxes and insects habitat that you are destroying so you can feel good about not killing animals. And all the pesticides and stuff they put into the ground to make it so no bugs or animals can live in that environment GREAT JOB. YOU'RE NOT KILLING, HURTING, OR DEFORESTING ANYTHING.

The only meat I eat would be fish/seafood and birds.
I don't eat the flesh of dead mammals of any kind.
Not from some ethical/moral standpoint, but rather because my digestive system can no longer process fatty proteins, especially fatty animal proteins. So, I'm left having to avoid red meat altogether and stick with the less fatty white meats.

I like chicken and bacon and steak and burgers and venison and buffalo and salmon and oysters and everything else waaay too much to ever be vegetarian.
To be completely honest, sometimes I do consider it or even wish I could go vegetarian, but there's just no way I could ever realistically do that. Animals just taste too good, god damn it. The only way it could ever realistically happen is if I had to slaughter my own food, that's the only thing that would actually force me to be a vegetarian. But as long as I can buy it from someone else, there's no way I could ever possibly stay away.
God damn cows why do they have to taste so good

I know. Animals taste so good. Butchering is a wakeup call. I couldn't dress out a deer. When I filet a two pound walleye, it's cool. When it's a big one it freaks me out a little.

Interestingly if you just eat meat you don't have to supplement anything- all those vital proteins are there.

Because they don't have enough protein in their diets. Six Quarter Pounders with Cheese a week would clear that right up.

Wait so you really see something wrong with lamb fed chicken, or beef fed pork? Surely not farm raised catfish dieting on sustainable veal?

Good .
Everyone should try to eat less meat.
Meat isn't necessary to live/survive. Most people are just straight up addicted to it and consuming meat as part of every single meal has become pressed into their minds.
I have no inherent issue with killing and eating animals...but I have a major issue with keeping animals in cages/corrals their entire existence (they never even have a "life") and killing them to eat them. That just doesn't sit right with me AT ALL. I don't have any interest in eating the flesh of a creature that never actually had a "life". I don't have any interest in eating the flesh of a creature that only exists because of a long trail of destruction. It's filthy disgusting to me on so many different levels.
I have a major issue with how much forest is destroyed and land in general is destroyed to grow soy/corn/grain that is used to stuff the guts of animals that are kept in corrals. Or when land that can be used to grow crops that are actually nutritious for humans to consume are instead used for grain.
I have a major issue with how much water is used to grow all of that soy/corn/grain...I have a major issue with how much soil/earth is completely fucked & destroyed by all of the salt based/synthetic fertilizers that are dumped on those crops for them to grow.
The entire industry of "meat" is fucked up and terrible for our planet. It's one giant trail of destruction from beginning to end. Our planet, our home that gives us everything, can not support the inflating meat industry as our population expands. But very few people are trying to change their habits.
...Most people can't think beyond the tip of their nose and don't put any effort into changing their habits for the overall health & well being of this biome we're all part of. Most people are also too big of a pussy to kill & butcher an animal. I bet the vast majority of meat eaters, probably most people in this thread, don't have the guts to actually kill an animal and cut it apart and feel the warm blood of the animal on their own hands/skin and see the soul in the eyes of the animal before they kill it....Again, I honestly feel majority of people are just straight up addicted to meat. I even felt the addiction in myself when I chose to stop eating the stuff (tho it wasn't difficult for me to do, I still eat delicious foods it wasn't hard to give up).
With that said...I have no issue at all with people that hunt for their own meat and I don't have a problem with people that keep some live stock and slaughter their own either. I won't touch any meat from a store but I'll actually eat meat that came from a wild animal that was hunted or from a families own live stock that they slaughtered themselves. My issue isn't about killing animals or eating meat, it's about a fucked up industry that is detrimental and destructive to the overall health of our planet/biome....as well as keeping millions & millions of animals locked up in cages/corrals which are merely existing and not actually living just for the sake of stuffing the stomachs of humans, that's not right at all.
And to get just a little woo-woo (and for the record, "woo-woo" often makes the logical/cold/scientific parts of myself cringe)...I feel there is an energy/essence to all things, and there's nothing but death/destruction and foul nasty shit in the material that comes from the meat industry.
I don't eat meat...All my friends and family do but I still get along with them fine...I don't preach about it, but I do occasionally mention things that one should make an effort to eat less meat. Occasionally, once or twice a year, I'll stand up on my soapbox and ramble about it (like now). Most people don't really give a shit about the planet that gives them life though.
If one is aware of the destruction the meat industry causes, and they still choose to eat meat as regularly as they do...I do perceive them to be a bit selfish and self centered and not really give a shit about the destruction they choose to support, simply because they like the taste of something.
I have the same POV in regards to anyone that doesn't try to change their habits and ways for the health of our planet/biome. Like plastic bags, who the fuck still uses plastic bags? It's a habit, people are lazy and don't like to change and don't care much beyond the tip of their nose.
One doesn't have to give up meat entirely, just cut back on it, go a day with out it here & there. It's absolutely fucking crazy and senseless how so many people have it pressed into their minds that meat is required to be part of every meal, it's not...Choosing to go a few days through the week with out eating any meat can have an huge impact if everyone did that. Have one day a week that you don't eat meat, or one day a week that you do eat meat, or anything between.
I just wish more people would reflect on how their habits and ways impacts the planet, and wish more people would be willing to change their habits & ways.
And I'm not some PETA person or crazy animal rights activists, I can't stand most of those folks...I'm just some dude that sees the destruction the meat industry causes and sees that our planet can not support such things in the long run as our population expands and feels it's not right to essentially imprison millions of animals purely to stuff our guts.

Yes, ask him. In fact I think he said he eats more more than that possibly. He lives off a strict diet of whole (and spatchcock) chickens and goulash

Yeah I eat meat. I litterally would not even know what to eat at all whatsoever if I ate no meat. I would be way too paranoid about not getting all the vitamins and I don’t know too much about vitamins so it would be just way too complicated to try and understand. I know there are so vegan foods people say are healthy but I don’t want to be taking vitamin pills in a worst case scenario if I didn’t get enough vitamins that day. And vitamins from meat seems like it’s more natural than a vitamin pill not sure.

Beef is the most inefficient food on the planet per calorie, even in terms of meat poultry and fish is 10x more efficient, and most grains/vegetables 100x more efficient let alone the pollution :3

I don't eat the flesh of dead mammals of any kind.
Not from some ethical/moral standpoint, but rather because my digestive system can no longer process fatty proteins, especially fatty animal proteins. So, I'm left having to avoid red meat altogether and stick with the less fatty white meats.
same here, fish & seafood life. I had a bit of chicken recently for the first time in years.

All joking aside - that's pretty much my view on it as well.
Truth be told - I eat meat quite a bit, but I've been trying to cut back lately, and switch primarily to seafood. I feel like hell after eating too much red meat.

I hunt, trying to get more of my meat in a more ethical/sustainable way. I still eat out and will buy from grocery stores but I'm trying to do that less and less. Hunting takes a lot of time to do everything yourself, I'm trying to get enough wild game to fill the freezer and last me and my chick a year.
Wild game animals had one bad day, which is vastly different than the life of a farm animal.

Do you currently hunt? I use a rifle for now because its a highly efficient meat harvesting tool. Bow hunting is more of a challenge and I'd like to go that route someday but for a quick clean kill where I get to harvest as much meat as possible, I'll stick to a rifle for now. There's so many deer in residential areas I live in, there's lots of wooded areas for the deer to live in around neighborhoods. I think about crossbow hunting at night, but its so illegal and if you're caught its a pretty hefty fine...
I also do all my own processing and packaging. I even have a grinder for making burger meat. I'm the only one who puts hands on the meat until its on the plate.

You sound pretty ignorant actually.
The points you made don't hold any weight and don't make any sense.
Are you at all aware of how much water and energy it takes to grow just one single pound of meat?
There are various #s/figures....but somewhere along the lines of 2,500 gallons of water, 12 pounds of grain, 35 pounds of topsoil and the energy equivalent of one gallon of gasoline to produce one pound of feedlot beef....And it takes about 500 gallons of water to raise one pound of chicken. If I was given an equivalent amount of resources I guarantee I can grow waaay more than a pound of plant based food.
The amount of land and water and energy that it takes to feed all the animals within the meat industry is WAY more land & water & energy than it would take to grow plants if every human was on a plant based diet.
Raising meat is incredibly inefficient and takes a tremendous amount of resources versus growing plants. It takes a huge amount of acres just to grow the feed for animals and it takes a massive amount of water to grow those plants that are fed to the animals. The amount of acres and water that it takes to grow meat can grow waaaaay more nutritious food for humans. Why grow several thousands acres of just corn or soy and use millions upon millions of gallons of water when all that land & water can be used to grow a diverse range of nutritious & delicious plants?
If there's a drought, then how are animals going to eat and drink? How is a farmer going to feed and water his livestock if there's no food or water available?
And if there was a drought...why would one want use the little available water to grow an entire field of soy beans just to feed a cow when that water can grow an entire garden of diverse nutritious foods?
There are so many aspects within the meat industry that are detrimental to our planet. Those points I made are just in regards to the massive amounts of land and water and energy that is required to raise meat. Then there's the atmospheric pollution aspect, cows produce 501,593 metric tons of methane per 1 billion kilograms of beef produced. That amounts to about 0.126 pounds of methane for every quarter-pound hamburger you eat, that is a relatively huge amount of methane for a tiny piece of meat....Then there's the aspect of the soil/earth being destroyed by the synthetic/salt based ferts used to grow wide expanses of nothing but grains...Then there's the aspect of all the pesticides that are dumped on those crops and the impact they have on local eco-systems....I can go on and on....The meat industry is filthy and destructive from beginning to end.
Growing and eating what plants offer us is tremendously more efficient and less destructive to our planet than corralling/caging up millions of animals and using millions of acres of land and billions of gallons of water.
I'm not saying people need to stop eating meat entirely, that is not at all what I'm going on about...Just saying people should cut back on the amount of meat they eat.

You make it sound like not eating meat is some huge drastic change in diet versus eating meat.......it is not at all.
Doing something like a carb-free diet or low-sugar diet any any other type of "diet" is way more restrictive and challenging than simply cutting out meat from one's diet.
I still eat all of the same foods I used to eat before I gave up meat. My diet hasn't really changed at all. I still eat Pizza, pasta, teriyaki stir fry and all sorts of other delicious asian-style dishes , burritos, soups, chilis, egg rolls, cookies, pastries, lasagna, sushi , calzones, cakes, pies, etc etc etc.
Plants are quite nutritious, just because once has cut out meat from their diet doesn't mean one is going to be eating only lettuce & carrots & tofu...The only vitamin I take is b-12 since I don't eat meat.
It is not a drastic change or difficult to do at all...again, I feel most people are addicted and totally stuck in the habit of meat being a requirement with every single meal they eat. Most people can't even manage to give up using plastic bags at the grocery store that they usually throw away as soon as they get home.
I get it...I still find meat to be a delicious thing, I understand lol, I love the smell of a tri-tip on a BBQ and the smell of chicken being fried...But since I'm aware of the destruction and filth involved with the meat industry I absolutely don't feel right supporting that industry with my $ and even more so I don't want the material from that industry going into and becoming a part of my body/system.

I eat meat quite a lot and think it's an essential part of eating for me personally. Meat makes some of the best dishes on earth and I love cooking so I couldn't imagine being vegan. I even get a tad mad if I have a fully vegetarian meal for dinner. Just has to do with the pleasure of taste.

I actually think meat is one of the healthier foods out there, if you could only eat one food for the rest of your life, a ruminate animal is the only ones that wont cause deficiencies, theres one chick named Mikhaila Peterson who is allergic to everything except beef, she only eats steaks with salt

Personally I get very sick when I don't balence it with vegetables but I have bad stomach problems to begin with so I can see in rare instances where it'd be better then a balanced diet

No I think my body would have a harder time with a vegan diet but all meat would screw with me too. I think a balanced diet is important

her story is interesting, she was diagnosed with juvenile rhumetoid arthritus in like kindergarten and severe depression when she was like 12, she had to get a hip replacement at like 17 cause the arthritus chewed through her joints, she would get super itchy and shit and was on like 10 medications, she started by cutting out gluten and started to restrict more and more till she was just eating like steaks, simple salads and apples, and all her symptoms went away, then she got pregnant and they all came back, then after her pregnancy she cut out everything but steak, and the symptoms cleared again, shes tried adding foods back in but the itchyness and depression comes back, she said soy is one of her favourite foods, so she tried to eat a miso soup with edamame, but she had some major reactions to that, and now she is deathly afraid of eating anything but beef
and on r/zerocarb and r/carnivore ive seen lots of claims that carnivore curing depression, theres another chick named Amber O'hearn whos eaten carnivore for like a decade and she said it cured her bipolar
the main reason I want to try carnivore for a few months is these mood disorder claims, I want to see if I feel happier on it or these claims are bunk, Im starting after the new year Jan 1st, I asked my mom and my grandmother for grocery store gidftcards for christmas preasents this year so I have some cash to afford it, I eat a lot cheaper diet right now

gopher said: I actually think meat is one of the healthier foods out there, if you could only eat one food for the rest of your life, a ruminate animal is the only ones that wont cause deficiencies....
In general, yes, meat is loaded with good stuff.
But there's a big difference between one going out and hunting and killing a wild animal versus breeding billions & billions of animals and putting them in cages/corrals and tearing apart large swaths of our planet's land/forests to feed those animals and dumping billions of gallons of water into grain crops to feed those animals and dumping millions of tons of toxic salts/fertilizers into our soils.
The meat industry is not healthy for the planet and in the long run is quite detrimental to the well being of the biome we're all part of. If it is destructive to the biome, our home, then it is not inherently healthy for us AT ALL!
I feel that for something to be truly "healthy" it has to be harmonious and in balance with nature, not beneficial for only one single organism or one single species....But again, most folks don't care about much beyond their nose and for some reason can't see the bigger picture and holistic system of our planet/biome.
The meat industry is one of the many things that is essentially a disease to our planet, and people still go on with "but it's healthy for me!" .
We're not separate from the planet, and the planet/biome as a "whole" is very much alive...we're woven into and very much apart of it all, if our choices & actions cause destruction to our planet then we're essentially causing destruction to ourselves. I wish more people would wake up and open there eyes and minds and see the big picture that they're part of.
Quote:
Seriously_trippin said: I eat meat quite a lot and think it's an essential part of eating for me personally. Meat makes some of the best dishes on earth and I love cooking so I couldn't imagine being vegan. I even get a tad mad if I have a fully vegetarian meal for dinner. Just has to do with the pleasure of taste.
Well your pleasure of taste comes from nothing but death & destruction...There wasn't even ever any "life" in the meat you eat. And everything that went into the meat you ate caused nothing but destruction to our home.
You don't need to go full on vegan to lessen your impact/damage on the planet. I don't eat meat but I'm not a vegan at all.
Why do people think so black & white in regards to these sorts of things? There's talk about the topic that people should try to cut back on meat and people respond, "I could never go vegan". As if the only two options that exist are being a meat eater or going vegan and one has to choose one or the other .
I love the taste of meat too...but I can't justify supporting the destruction the meat industry causes to our planet or the imprisonment of billions of animals that never get to have a life just because I like the taste of something.

exactly. Is it gonna be like abolishing slavery where we just let all of them go? next thing you know everyone will have to set their cows free and there will be cows everywhere. If that happened I would have beef for years to come lol. Grab my gun and go cow huntin

buy a rifle or shotgun and go hunting. now you will have meat for months. Could only cost u a few bucks, including your license and a few bullets or shells (depending on how good of a shot you are)

If only hunting was as easy as that. Unless you own the property your bound by hunting seasons which are short. Very short. There's year round season for trash animals or birds but deer/elk/moose you need luck as well as skill. And it could still take years to actually come out successful.

of course. Hunting is simple but its not easy. public property is widely available especially in rurual areas. Obviously you can go days, weeks, months without finding something but generally a few days is all people need if they know the area. Starting out may be hard

Out of the 28 total meals per week that I consume, 5 of them have red meat, 19 of them have chicken. On one day a week I consume no meat (so 4 times a month, I have a no meat at all day).

Luck? Lmao at everyone that uses expensive shampoos and scents. You want to know the REAL secret to attracting deer? Weed. I shit you not, go up in your stand and smoke some weed while you wait. It attracts them like no other. My brother and I didnt shower and used our same clothes we wore all day. Went up in a stand. And throughout the night we had like 4 or 5 deer wonder around us until we found the one we wanted. Even I am still suprised at how well it worked
Edit: and by wonder around us I mean like a couple actually came up close like a few feet away from the stand.

I couldnt. They were planted by a creek on a little outlet by a field. Perfect spot. They were like 2 or 3 weeks into veg and I make the hike to give some nutes to them and what do I see? A deer munching on the top of what was left of one of my plants(with the others already stripped) with this retarded look on its face until it noticed me then it turned around and yeeted itself into the creek and bounced away......I wish I would have had my gun on me that day

Actually, I simple stopped eating meat at work. Rarely in restaurants. Not having it every day anymore, turns out, after 2 years, I don't really like meat anymore.
There's so much vegetarian alternatives out there. Without the gross smell of meat .

I try to respect everyone, but I have no respect for pescatarians, what the fuck does the medium an animal lives in have to do with whether or not you eat it?
Like "oh that animal lives in water, I will kill and eat it, but animals that live in air are sacred."
How does that make sense?
What about amphibians? How much of its life needs to be in water for them to eat it?
Can pescatarians eat deep fried frog legs? I hear they taste like chicken and are good with hot sass n blue cheese

Right on.
Since I've stopped eating meat over the past 3 or 4 years now....I still find the aroma of things like a BBQ to smell good (the essence of the wood-smoke and the essence of the seasonings no doubt is the "core" of the good smells), and the smell of fried chicken is still a pleasant smell to me.
But the smell of just straight up beef being cooked in a pan, the smell of the meat itself cooking with out seasonings, that smells so putrid & foul to me now. It literally smells exactly like sour cow shit to me. Like the aroma I smell when driving by a cattle dairy, that pungent aroma of methane and sour cow shit, the smell of beef cooking smells exactly like that to me now. Not kinda like it, but exactly like it. When the people I live with cook beef in a pan the entire house smells like sour cow shit or like a cattle ranch, it doesn't smell pleasant at all.
And the smell of pork being cooked in a pan, the smell of the meat itself cooking, also smells extremely sour and rancid to me.

Someone saying they only eat fish is not the same thing as eating animals on the basis of their living in water or not. It does not imply that they eat aquatic mammals for example. There is no type of fish that has comparable mental faculties to any mammal. They are decidedly a lower life form compared to mammals as far as their level of awareness/consciousness.

There are various reasons why people choose to not eat meat.
I choose to not eat meat (from the meat industry) mostly because of the detrimental impact it has on our planet and the long trail of destruction it takes to create a tiny piece of flesh to eat, and partially because I feel it's not right to imprison billions & billions of animals merely to stuff our stomachs with...It's not because I feel it's wrong to kill and eat animals, I have no issue with hunting and fishing, but I do feel it's wrong to imprison billions of animals and the impact that industry has on our planet is disgusting. The meat industry is one of the many things that is killing the planet and tearing apart the biome we're all part of.
Going out and catching my own fish to eat has waaaaay way way less of an impact on our planet than buying a single pound of beef that took 2,000+ gallons of water to produce and a tremendous amount of other resources & energy. Also, the cow that flesh came from likely never had a life, it merely existed within a corral for years, probably separated from its mother when it was a young calf. I don't want to support the imprisonment of animals and the destruction of our planet with my $, and I only want to eat things that actually lived a life.
I intend on getting back into fishing more after the new year...and hunting Turkey & deer within the next couple years.
But yea...I do hear what you're getting at, in regards to those that choose to not eat the flesh of terrestrial animals because they think it's wrong to kill and eat an animal, but they will still eat the flesh of fish.

Psi and OM, I respect you both and thank you for your responses. Hopefully you recognized my comment as snarkily as it was meant. That said I must drill into your responses
I guess I get the mammals vs non-mammals but plenty of land dwelling air breathing animals are just as stupid if not more so than a large fish. There are also whole classes of air breathing animals that are not mammals like birds and lizards. In fact wikipedia just told me that fish hold the records for both the highest and lowest brain weight to body weight of all vertebrates. My own mind is blown by the idea that an african elephantnose fish has more brain as a percent of body weight than even us, holy shit for real til.
On the ecological front, unless you are only eating farm raised fish the reality is you are eating a rapidly depleated resource. Large swaths of the pacific are virtual deserts. Wild atlantic fisheries are a few generations from collapse with borderless commercial fishing and at sea processing.
Look I eat meat, fish, poultry and dairy so I am not throwing stones but I can't help but feeling it comes down to eating fish is easily justified cause you can't relate to them like an air breathing animal.

I think that's an excellent, important point. Our rainforests are disappearing because we cut or burn them down fro growing soy and cows there. Result: all the beautiful magic plants living in them may be lost forever.
150 lifeforms, plants and animals disappear forever, every day!
An important point also for gardening: don't buy plants, seeds, plant material from non-sustainable sources!

I just got behind a car in traffic that had a bumper sticker that read "If you consider yourself to be superior to an animal make a moral choice to not eat one".
The goofy bastard had a dog in the car with him. It made me wonder if he has his dog on a vegan diet and it reminded me of the Joe Rogan bit about the #vegancat phenomenon on Instagram where all the cats look like they're at the edge of death.
"RIP fluffy. We had six wonderful months together. #vegancat"
