Documentation of My First Grow (ADVICE GREATLY NEEDED AND APPRECIATED)
#27036185 - 11/13/20 12:21 AM (3 years, 2 months ago) |
|
|
This will be a Thread dedicated to documenting my first grow from beginning to end.
Currently I have 5 BRF jars inoculated 10/17/20 with GT Multi Spore Syringe (MSS)
The one jar in the back was inoculated 11/5/2020 with GT MSS as well.
These jars are incubating in a 2' x 2' x 4' Grow tent on a 3 tier metal shelf. with a sticky back LED strip lining the interior tent frame.
I have a very small space heater That I JUST PLACED IN TODAY due to cold temps at my location.
The small space heater is plugged into a thermostat which has a probe on a wire that is positioned near the middle shelf. I have it set to 73 degrees F. to be close to "normal" room temp. Its usually 62-67 in the room the tent is in. sometimes colder, so I feel the heater is a must.
I plan to spawn 4 of the BRF jars to coir in the tub that is holding the supplies on the middle shelf or a 15qt shoe box, still to be decided which tub I am using.
Hoping to use the best BRF cake as inoculate for 4 to 6 Sterilized Whole Oat Grain Jars.
I will update with pictures when I spawn to Coir.

Today was time to spawn
I had 4 1/2 pint jars of BRF
Prepared my coir/verm using the Bucket TEK by puting a 650g brick of coir with 1 pint of verm and added 1 gallon of boiling water
waited an hour and mixed with a big spoon, broke up any small chunks.

waited 3 hours then I put 2 pints of coir/verm (4 cups) let it cool while I removed the cakes from the jars and grated the BRF cakes with cheese grater using 2 pints of spawn so it was a 1:1 ratio

(when I was pouring off the verm layer into the trash I saw a dark gray blob the size of a very small piece of verm hoping it was not mold) cut about half inch portion of the top layer of cake off and threw that away
once the spawn was grated I mixed the 1:1 ratio together verry well by hand
I leveled the surface and patted down the edges and snapped the lid on and labeled it and put it into the grow tent on the shelf. lets hope in 10 days its almost fully colonized and not molding.

how often does mold occur after spawning if the spawn looked good?

I think with cakes, you’d see the mold start in the cakes before they were fully colonized so not very often... maybe late in the game; third flush & up, but if you play the game right, you should never see it. It’s a hard question to answer definitively though

think I should be worried about the dark grey little fuzzball i saw in the top upper layer of verm when I opened the jar? it was about the size of a piece of verm, no bad smell just mushroomy smell

If it wasn't transferred to agar and cleaned up, you are simply hoping that it's healthy. Just because you see white growth on the exterior, doesn't mean that there is only healthy mycelium growing in that 3 dimensional cylinder.
They all mold eventually - if there's no major issues you should get at least a flush or two out of them.

You’d more than likely notice mold as you grate the cakes.. the gray ball was probably just myc.. happens with most of my cakes. You’re basically looking for peace of mind and I’m trying to give it to ya because there’s nothing for you to do but play the waiting game.. you can’t stop mold from happening at this point it it’s gonna happen, it’s gonna happen.. just gotta wait and see.

well its been 12 days, we have full colonization and mycelium is coming up through the casing, I have hundreds of what I think is primordia covering the surface...
it has been colonizing in the dark grow tent, should I now introduce the light 12hr/12hr ? should I mist at all? should I fan at all? zoom in on the pics. sorry for quality.

You can do fruiting condition immediately or at full colonization or anywhere between.

Most users just put the box into fruiting conditions once the spawn is mixed into the substrate. Keeping things in the dark is outdated information (for cubes at least).
If your tub is dialed in correctly you just need 1 heavy misting once introduced into fruiting conditions. A dialed in tub won't need additional misting and will never need fanning.

added a few better pics, removed micropore tape around the edges of the lid gap to introduce a little more fae and got the lights on and gave it a nice misting

I run my lights on a 12/12 cycle. I think CocaineBuffet was referencing keeping colonizing mycelium in darkness as Stamets originally suggested in his books. It's difficult for me to gauge your surface conditions from the photos you provided, but the mycelium prefers a stable high surface humidity indicated by glistening globes of water that are allowed to dissipate and evap off a bit.
Here's a good reference for surface conditions: https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/23999053

You can try and mist it and dial in conditions better. However often times fixing things after the fact usually results in a poor result. Get started on your next project and improve is my best advice.

here is an update, not gonna lie... pretty disappointed due to all the work I put into this. Got a few questions...
1. do these even look like golden teachers to you?
2. do I need to pick these or wait until they get bigger and gills turn black? I think I see some spores below the caps on the substrate so I'm leaning towards picking them, they are just so damn small.
3. does anyone recommend side/corner watering to increase humidity?
Mss GT to BRF to Coir 1:1. RH 91% temp 71F 6qt shoe box
any advice greatly appreciated

1. Golden Teachers just look like regular cubes to me, golden caps and potency all over the spectrum. That being said, your tubs look like they may very well be a Golden Teacher variety. 2. Pick the ones that are open, your second flush looks more promising. 3. Most of the water in the substrate is still in there. Judging from the walls, your humidity levels look fine, just make sure your surface conditions stay moist. Bottom watering (pouring water down the side) isn't indicated until the sub pulls away from the walls.

1st, 2nd, I guess it doesn’t matter. All the new pins you’re seeing look way better than those first four mushies in there, haha. I wouldn’t bottom water at this point, like I mentioned four little fruits aren’t going to use up a lot of water so bottom watering at this point may over hydrate the sub and cause the bottom to go anaerobic which will cause more problems for you. After you pull a bunch of fruits out of this next batch then a bottom watering might be warranted. Keep your walls moist like that and make sure your surface is dialed and you’ll see results.
What do your sides and bottom look like?

I bet the sub was over field capacity. You’ll likely see a better second or third flush if it makes it that long.

That would indicate too much water then? why would the top dry out and cause me to start misting it? should I not mist anymore then?

Looks like your sub is pulling away from the walls because the side pins not because of water loss. No weird colors is a good sign so we'll keep our fingers crossed.

Being over field capacity would create anaerobic conditions throughout the sub producing all sorts of headaches for you. Top would dry out because it's the most exposed to FAE, the mycelium won't use the extra water to keep the surface moist, only misting will do that. Maintain your surface conditions and hopefully your next round of mushies will resolve any excess water that may be present in the sub.

Pasty, would you say all these new pins are considered first flush still? then once I harvest whatever matures, and do a 12hr soak the second flush will start, correct?

Flushes are a man made description of a process in nature that doesn’t necessarily conform all the time. The answer to your question is highly subjective.

welp, all the fruits are turning out pretty much the same either pinning and not maturing at all or pinning, growing a few centimeters and opening cap while tiny, and I mean verrry small... so small that they wont even fit on a dehydrator rack they just fall through.

I know I just wish I knew what it was specifically, I mist, I fan, I keep the RH at 99%, temps at 70 degrees F. Maybe its because I don't have any air from outside the grow tent coming in/out?

You have no fresh air going into your grow?

I mean I kinda thought that since the grow tent isn't 100% air tight I thought enough air would get in and out. The tub is in the grow tent on a shelf with a lid on unsnapped tho.
To clarify tho, there is no air going in/out of the grow tent itself except for when I crack the door, fan, mist..etc

Grow tents suck for cubes and the purpose of fanning is to dry things out.
