Newbie: Learning to Create Spore Prints! 1

I have recently discovered the magic of mycology. I have too many hobbies already but the basics of mushroom cultivation seemed so easy that I thought I would have fun and just get started.
Rather than spending money on prints and syringes of interesting varieties, I thought I would trial the basics with store bought common varieties.
I have some Portobellos on aluminium foil to see if I can create a spore print. If successful, I will attempt to create spore syringes from them.
Peace!

Unfortunately my own attempts at germinating agaricus bisporus spores have remained largely unsuccesfull, compared to for example cubensis cyan and ovoids which worked, so its not the technique. My other edibles I always cloned from fresh supermarket mushrooms, thats the route I'm gonna go for agaricus from now on too. That was recommended to me for shiitake, king oysters, oysters because apparently its hard to get those to germinate as an amateur, same apparently as it seems for the portobellos.
If youre gonna go agar anyway its not much harder to clone. Just take off the cap, tear lengthwise in half the stem and then in a SAB with a sterilized knife (I use cheap discounter knifes flame sterilized with a creme brulee torch) cut out a piece from the middle of the stem, where no air had touched it before you opened it in your SAB, and put that on the plate. It behaves like stem cells, so new mycelium and eventually mushrooms will grow from it. After that standard procedure, agar -> grain then grain -> bulk. With agaricus its also important to note that they are secondary decomposers so the need a predecomposed substrate, namely composted horsepoo for best results. I've heard people have smaller successes with just sterlized fresh hpoo or some guy said his composting process is just putting the hpoo in a trashbag and letting it sit for a couple of weeks and banging it around a little bit every ounce and a while to stir it. I'm interested to follow your process because I am paralleling it, gonna cook plates later and buy portobellos tomorrow and clone them. As I said, after oysters and shitaakes this will be my third edible I experiment with, and taste wise I gotta be honest its my favorite mushroom. I always saved it up for last because I considered it a bit advanced cause of the whole hpoo thing.

Thanks for your reply polaritymind! My first attempt has already failed, and the mushrooms failed to move any meaningful amount of spores onto the plate.
I'm going to review the tek instructions and try again.

If you got them at the store the spores have long been already dropped

Thanks for your reply! I'll save myself the time and not bother trying with them again.
A local market sells fresh gourmet mushrooms that they grow. Do you think it's worth trying some of these? We're in summer here in Tasmania so not much happening the wild but I would like to learn some basic techniques.

Well I'd have to disagree here, since I made beautiful spore prints from them which I even used to show some friends how a spore print looks, but they just didnt germinate for some reason. I did have problems if I used old ones, fresh ones ideally with a still closed veil and refrigerated were they way to go.

depending on location store ones may have been sterilised?
see how you go with market ones.
prints are straight forward, you'll have no trouble when picking fresh.
