Pasteurization Vessels and the Law

I'm looking for those 55 gal drums people use to pasteurize large amounts of straw for commercial mushroom cult. Since they are being used for food service, I'm sure there are volumes of laws restricting the type of drums and what the drums were previously used. I had my sights set on stainless steel drums with no paint or anti rust coating, but I am having trouble finding them locally.
So I have two questions, where can I find these laws and two where can I find those drums?

I don't know about the laws, but I got the drum I use from a large local bakery. It was prviously used for cooking oil I found that pasteurizing large volumes of straw in a 55 gallon drum is innefficient. It takes 2-3 hours to pasteurize and spawn enough straw for 1 column that's 5' tall x 12" across. http://www.yankeecontainers.com/SteelDrums/OpenTop.html I'm thinking of buying a new fuel oil tank and cutting the top off, then mounting it on a frame so that it can be tilted to dump the straw out. A 300 gallon tank would be able to pasteurize enough straw to make about 6 columns, which would speed up the process alot.

Why don't you just invest in making a Phase 2 chamber. LOL Look at pg 171 of GGMM. I bet you could ghetto rig one up.
But back to me, how much dry straw could you pasteurize in one run in the 55 gallon?

I plan on a 50 lb generation of spawn. 5-10 lbs spawn the next generation of spawn. Those 40-45 lbs of spawn will go into SIX columns 8inches in diameter and five feet tall. First generation is narrow mouth quarts, 2nd is bags. Not planning a third.
So it would be nice to be able to complete all six logs in one day. Think I can do it with one 55 gal drum.

you can only pasteurize about one bale in a 55 gallon drum, 35-40 lbs. I'm sure you could do it in 8-9 hours, no problem.

A local venue I know of has the large majoriity of the food service done by a local company. Behind said company are scads of 55g and smaller drums made of different materials including stainless. I got a couple palstic ones off them for free about 1.5 years ago. They store or recycle/discard their drums so agetting a few off them is no problem. I tell you this to give you an idea of where to look locally for free drums.

I have used 55 gallon drums in the past. I found that wood is more effcient to heat with than gas. I set my drum up at a level that I can slide my gas burner under it when I have brought the temperature up to 165 degrees with a big wood fire. Than I can maintane the temp with gas. Don't use cinder blocks to do so. The crumble when they get to hot.

Hi there, My first post so if Im off base please have mercy. Have you tried to take a hot water heater and strip it down? Alot of those are stainless tanks, although some are not and have a glass lineing Im told. If you find one cut the top off. Hope this helps.
