IMO running it all the time will just wear your filter out exponentially faster.

I have heard some theories that a flowhood should always be running but, unless you are in some clean-room in a laboratory I highly doubt this is the case

I start mine and let it run for about 15-20 minutes to clean the air in the room up a bit before working but never would I leave it running full time

I don't know about filter replacement but I've had mine for 2+ years and it still works great. Maybe if you start to have major contamination issues but it will easily last a few years if you have a prefilter

I used to run mine before working as well. I stopped doing that a while ago and it has made no difference. The unidirectional flow keeps particles from entering your work area from the outside.

You need to worry more about particles generated by your own movements and body/tool placement than by particles originating from outside the flow. Any particles that fall from above, for instance, wouldn't be able to penetrate the flow. So it's pretty much pointless.

Like shadow said, you're not in a clean room, you will never strip your room of particles. Even particles generated within the flow but away from your work won't be able to make it from the far left of your hood, to the far right. This is the entire point of laminar flow.

would you recommend hod flow over a still air box?

Depends on what you're trying to accomplish.

I only got a flow hood because I wanted to grow bulk. To grow enough for personal use and some to give to friends, a still air box did me fine.

The major benefit of a flow hood in my opinion is being able to do grow bags without any hassles. Yeah a flowhood will be easier than a still air box for majority of the work done in this hobby, but it's a big expense for growing a relatively small amount, and you still need to have good sterile procedures or you can still make mistakes and contaminate things.

Probably best to start with a SAB unless you're dead set on growing serious bulk, even then, there are people here who do bulk without hoods.
