The Big Dose and Harvard Man
    #27035351 - 11/12/20 02:21 PM (3 years, 2 months ago)

Has anyone seen this movie? It's from 2002. I find it pretty interesting how the movie is incredibly accurate regarding LSD. It catches a lot of flack for the perma-trip message and one dimensional hallucinogenic special effects, but I have not seen another movie more true to the mindset of a massive dose. Everything in society is kind of like spiderwebs when you're that high and you can't help but accidentally walk through them and cause confusion and problems, and they tend to stick to you too. A lot of movies I've seen show psychedelics in an inaccurate way, whereas with Harvard Man it really feels terrifying and true to that insanity.

James Toback himself claims to have had a disastrous overdose of LSD from his time at Harvard, and despite leagues of commenters and critics that lampoon the movie's depiction of a strong, strong acid trip, I truly believe that the majority of people who watch that movie and say 'that's not how acid works' haven't done all that much themselves. I think it's beautiful and accurate in its depiction of tripping, even though it has horrible acting at times and some weird editing. I think the editing actually puts you in a very acid-y headpspace of flicking between conversations, getting confused, and getting scared of a lot of stuff.

Let me know what you think about this movie, and more importantly, the more sinister side of big doses. I find every time I use psychedelics it tests me and makes me appreciate my own mind, and the truest lesson they have ever seemed to teach me is that getting what you wish for isn't always pleasant or obvious. I legitimately believe that virtually the only real wisdom we gain from psychedelia is an appreciation of the human mind, especially the mind while sober.
