People Who Live in Cold Weather, Please Give Wardrobe Recommendations 1

I am moving to a city where the average temp is low, especialy in the winter. So for people who live in cold areas, do you have any recommendation for clothes. Any tips overall would help too.

Don't cheap out on your jacket. If you can afford to spend 2-300 on a winter coat do it. Most the coats at that price have 2 or 3 removable layers so you end up with a coat that can take you through the whole year. With a decent coat the rest of your clothes don't matter to much unless you're in the elements for awhile then you just have to wear some long johns under your pants. So I guess also add long johns to your list.

Layers. Use thin under shirts long or short sleeved and layer up. That way as you get warmer it's easier to take one layer off and put it back on when needed. Sweaters, thicker socks, a really good coat/parka, ear muffs (if you don't want to muss hair), toboggans, mufflers and scarves, good pair of gloves, some heavy duty shoes like waffle stomper type/hiking or galoshes/snow boots. There's even an electric heated jacket that is washable. I'm from Texas and live in CO now. It takes a few years to acclimate but I still am colder when others are warmer.

With a good coat I don't wear anything under it except a a t-shirt especially if im just doing normal to and from the car and light walking. I always keep a hat and gloves in the pocket just incase. Normal pants would just be jeans with nothing but underwear under then for normal everyday wear.
If I'm going to be in the elements for awhile then I still don't wear anything extra under the coat (unnecessary with a GOOD coat). Only thing I add is some long johns under my pants and thick socks. Really though if you're moving to a cold environment buying a couple pairs of wool socks wouldn't be a bad idea. As for shoes I don't wear boots unless I'm shoveling snow or know I'm going to be trekking through deep snow. Otherwise I wear a decent pair of shoes and they work fine (don't wear slip ons or anything else obviously thin).
Not to sound like a broken record but the coat is the most important. This is the only thing I buy name brand because the generics just don't last as long and are no where near as warm even though they seem thicker and heavier. Some good brands are columbia, north face, or patagonia. I personally thing columbia is about the best bang for the buck but there's alot of opinions.

Depends on how far you have to walk and how deep the snow is etc...I have sprayed many pairs of regular and hiking shoes with that water repellent stuff and it works great! Try many different pairs on and see what is most comfy for you. Also think about how long in the day you'll be wearing them and if you can bring a more comfy pair to work in and store the ones used to commute to work in or not. I just picked up a "zero Fahrenheit" warmth rated CK parka at mens wearhouse for 80 bucks. It's the warmest jacket I ever had really. Plus it's super lightweight and packable to a small bag that came with it. You don't have to buy name brand stuff, just look for the same tech when looking for a good coat, jacket, and sweaters. Try a lot of stuff on. Move around in them before buying. I like to shop though, some people don't.

Lots of thick, durable pants. And lots of sweaters/hoodies/jackets. I like 2 layers myself, a t-shirt and a warm sweater/hoodie. If its really cold, I will put on a fleece-lined jacket instead of a regular hoodie zip-up jacket.
And some nice gloves and beanie are nice to have as well when you are outside a lot.

Yes! There are! I forgot about those. I had several pairs but them seem to rip apart on me. Maybe I just used them too much
But those fleece-pants are really nice

so check this out. Im looking on columbia right now and the options that relate to what you guys are talking about are insulated and down, fleece, 3 and 1 interchange, parkas and rainwear. Insulated just looks like puffer coats which I am not into, i thought they would look a little different. This actually looks good i think https://www.columbia.com/p/mens-rockfall-down-jacket-1910621.html?dwvar_1910621_color=242&pos=4 or https://www.columbia.com/p/mens-barlow-pass-550-turbodown-jacket-1619281.html?dwvar_1619281_color=014&pos=17 Gimme your thoughts please

There is a point where I make sets of layered shirts. Short sleeve long sleeve and a thicker long sleeve sweater. Always long johns and when gets colder upper thermal goes on or sub the lighter long sleeve with a thermal. All about the layers. Just grab them and go. Sometimes lazy enough to wash all in one. Long johns and jeans then an added snow pants if low amount of energy exerted.
If I’m snowboarding long johns snowboard pants. Wool socks. Long sleeve shirt and nice snowboard jacket. If in the teens add a layer. And a neck gator. Powder skirt a must on my jacket that ties into the pants. And a light beanie. Good gloves button jacket sleeves tight then cinch gloves around jacket sleeves. And a few grams of herb

This is very important. I learned this when I lived in Chicago. The layers need to be easy peel-off cuz you may be out and about in freezing conditions and then when you get indoors with all the heat going, you will burn up if you can't get some of that garb off.

Once you sweat in your clothes you are asking for a bad time. So it's important to cool off if you get hot. Layers make that easy.

Absolutely the most important consideration when dressing for the cold:
1. Base should be thin and moisture wicking. 2. Mid layers should be insulating, thermal or fleece. 3. Outer layer should be shell/wind breaking.
I'd advise a couple of mid layers so you can peel off where needs be/avoid going down to the base layer, as you want that one tight.
In-depth explanation here:

Long underwear from November to March. I have a couple different thicknesses. The thin synthetic ones are good for cool days, and if it's -10C or colder I'll double up with a cotton layer overtop. If it's colder than -20C I'll throw some wool ones over the synthetic ones. That's for working outside all day though.
But layers are key, cotton, wool, and sythnetics and play around with what works best, but having options are great.

Corse wool as a mid layer keeps a lot of heat in and as others have said you always need a cap and gloves in your coat pockets. And wool socks are good two. If it's real cold I'll double them up and it's always good to have a spare pair of socks nearby if you think your feet might get wet or you could need another layer.

Carhart jackets went from cheap and out of style to fashionable hick wear in the last 20 years or so.
I never though they were very nice quality, but a lot of people love them.

Usually merino wool is soft and smooth for a base layer, but it's expensive.
Layering is so you trapping in warm air, like how insulation works in a house. I like soft cotton against my skin, and then bulkier items on top to trap the heat, and then a weatherproof layer outside. Feet are more likely to get damp, so wool is a better choice for them to stay dry, but nothing would stop you from wearing wool as a base layer, but you gotta find out what you like for comfort.
I wear wool socks year round though.

I don't like carhartt jackets for warmth. It depends what you are doing outside. If you are working out in the bush they aren't bad, but they aren't that great.
It depends on climate too. Is it going to be damp like the pacific northwest? Or dry and cold like North Dakota?

Get a jacket with a removable liner. It should be ventable too. On warmer days you can get away with just the liner. On warm wet days you can use just the exterior piece. Then when it's cold you bulk up and use it all together. I rarely use the exterior of my ski jacket, I just use the liner 95% of the year. I'm in Pittsburgh. Cold, but not super cold. When I lived in Canada I used the same jacket, but would wear a sweat shirt under it. On super cold days, -40F or so, I would double up on sweat shirts under the jacket.

So when you just use the liner does it just look like a sweater?

Calgary has very reasonably price realestate since oil shit the bed. There was a time you could make 100k a year out of highschool in Calgary. It was a golden time.
What would the avg temp be in the winter and summer there?

The liner in mine looks kind of like a black puffy jacket. Very much like this one; https://www.amazon.com/Columbia-Mens-Jacket-Black-Small/dp/B01MYNVZ5M/ref=sr_1_43?dchild=1&keywords=winter+jacket&qid=1605236553&sr=8-43
I've had various jackets like this over the years. I would say that if you plan to do what I suggest find a jacket that has both the liner and the exterior in a style you like.

BallHairDandruf said: so check this out.
These are better than those carhart ones.

What temps, got a jacket rated to -20c from the north face for 100(on sale from 300), with a fleece undergarmet, shirt, thermals im good to -80 with wind of 60km/h. Hand warmers in jacket pockets, gloves that have the mitten slip over, good boots, wind proof leggings and you all good with a scarf and googles.
I once trekked 1.5 miles in 60mp/h winds and non-adjusted air temp at -45F. What they don't mention is the layer of water on your eyes freezes in those conditions, ended up with a bith of an infection in my tear duct

I moved somewhere where it stays in the 60's or 70's most of the year.
Fuck the cold and Fuck the heat!!!
Before I lived here I lived in Michigan and then In Florida. Never again.
I was in Homedepot yesterday and I seen a jacket that is made by Milwaukee. It is a heated jacket and runs off a 12V rechargeable battery. Seemed hecka nice!

Seen similar undercoats, thinking of buying a few for gifts this year along with extra battery chargers, battery life on those are not that good.
