Who's experienced drug-induced psychosis?
    #27032159 - 11/10/20 07:00 PM (3 years, 2 months ago)

I'm looking to speak to someone who went into psychosis from taking a psychedelic, who had no history or family history of mental illness prior to.

I'm working on a documentary that explores this topic.  I know there are quite a few threads on drug induced psychosis but they're all very old and the users are inactive now. Thanks.

Why would you want to bring this to the publics eye? The only times I've ever heard of psychosis is from people doing extremely large doses of LSD. Rather than exploring psychosis, why don't you just explore the negative aspects of taking too high of a dose? I have a family history of mental illness and I even have mental illness myself but I've tripped like at least two dozen times and I haven't gone crazy on psychedelics. I probably would have already gone crazy by now especially with respect to that 200 microgram trip I did back in August which was too strong for me. During the trip I thought I was maybe going to go crazy but hey I never did.

Drug induced psychosis is mostly a myth, anti-drug propaganda left over from the 60s. The reality is that even people with schizophrenia can use psychedelics safely, and in fact psychedelics used to be used medically for the treatment of schizophrenia, with good effect. It's more likely that the very rare handful of reports of stuff like this happening are actually just people with mental illness who decide to use psychedelics, not psychedelics causing mental illness.

The sheer number of users here who use lots of psychedelics regularly should show how safe they are. We have millions of unique viewers visiting the forums every month. And we've been around for many years.

If psychedelics caused what you're talking about, then we'd all be crazy by now.

These are good points that I don't doubt at all, do you happen to have a solid source for this for future debates? Not arguing with you, I just want sources to bookmark for people that want to argue against that lol.

Yeah, I can't say I have ever gotten psychosis from psychedelics. I've gotten temporary amnesia off some shrooms once but even on high doses I can always snap back and carry on regular conversations with others if I had to.

But yeah, I just know I will be tripping, and I know what to expect. I think the myth of psychedelics making someone go temporarily "insane" during their trip is a misnomer. I've never acted irrationally on psychedelics. Maybe on high doses of DXM I could see how an outside observer would think I had lost my damn mind lol...but that was once, on a legal drug known as dextromethorphan

I would write your essay on the misinterpretation of psychosis from psychedelics due to 1960s propaganda

a foaf back in the day got psychotic after several shroom and acid trips. after one patricular LSD trip with 2 friends, where he thought that one of them is in fact his twin brother and where he called my friend on the phone, claiming that he is a sorcerer and he himself the sorcerer's apprentice, having to use the magic shampoo from the bathroom, he didn't return back to normal. i met him once or twice after that, he kept ranting incoherently about meaningless stuff... i already knew him faintly before the onset and he wasn't the smartest guy to begin with. other friends confirmed that he turned seriously psychotic after that one trip and also got treated with medications at the ward.

i heard of several people turning psychotic after either shroom or acid trips but all of them presumably had carried an underlying latent psychosis inside them before already. 2-3 people told me they only turn psychotic from weed and can use acid without a problem. i highly doubt that any form of schizophrenia can be treated with psychedelics though.

I’ve experienced it. Don’t have much time to go into it now as it’s late here but I’ll try to answer any questions you may have when I have time. Mainly experienced it when I was younger, using a mixture of cannabis and psychedelics and no it wasn’t something I have ever experienced without using psychedelics/cannabis (no family history of mental illness that I know of) but there does in my opinion need to be some sort of catalyst along with the drugs themselves.

Usually this will be something the user is unable to accept about himself or life in general which causes panic and then sends him off into a tail spin whereafter he becomes delusional.

I don’t think it is simply the cannabis and the psychedelic combination alone that causes these reactions though (at least not the first time) but strongly suspect because of the panic, other chemicals/neurotransmitters (adrenaline etc) can be released and combine badly with the drugs themselves.

There are plenty of people who have reported similar experiences especially when cannabis is involved. I should point out I never experienced psychosis with psychedelics alone (came close at times though it’s hard to know if that was not due to past drug-induced psychotic experiences) but it’s definitely possible I think if a person is irresponsible or in a bad place mentally.

Anyway typing on a phone and it’s uncomfortable so I’ll try to get back to you later and improve upon this.

Feel free to ask any questions though I may take a while to respond!

Never from a psychedelic, other substances yes. Bupropion caused a psychotic reaction for me and cannabis at a stuid high dose est 9 grams of encapsulated decarbed bud topped with vaping several grams and some large dabs caused a sort of psychotic delirium though I'd put it more towards delirium than psychosis.

I've experienced mild psychosis when a stupid doctor prescribed me trazodone. It made me get really angry at my mom like really angry and then I decided to stop taking the medication because my mom didn't deserve that shit. Stupid doctor. I think that's the only time I've had medication-induced psychosis.

I don't think you'll find many people who experience it from psychedelic's without some other underlying mental health disorder involved. I think someone in a manic state from a mood disorder like Bipolar might find themselves POSSIBLY suffering from stimulant psychosis or something close to it.

Now a deliriant like muscimol from Amanita is probably more prone to cause psychosis. Not gonna find anyone around here cultivating or trying to cultivate Amanita as far as I know though. The trip is bullshit compared to psilocybin.

I've had a friend who took LSD all the time go into a few psychoses on high doses of silver quality LSD crystal, but I wasn't there. I myself and my best friend have gone into psychosis from abusing ketamine though.

I myself was using so much everyday years and years ago that I finally had trouble speaking or moving or processing emotions, and literally sounded retarded.  I don't mean that as in a slur, I was actually retarded and sounded like a serious down syndrome patient.  I told myself to stop but kept doing massive lines and forgetting about it, then being convinced I was in psychosis because I was retarded, but wasn't doing any K anymore.  I literally was... retarded in terms of functionality.  My roommate, coolest guy ever, was sober and helped me book a flight home.  So I flew home to my moms house so I could figure out what was going on.  He drove me to the airport, and I was wheeled through the airport to the gate and then from the airport to baggage claim, and then my mom picked me up at the airport.  About 24 hours later after not using any ketamine, I returned to normal.  36 hours and if it was if it never happened, literally no lingering symptoms at all.  Truly the only psychotic break I've ever had even after over a decade of very heavy substance use.

Another time me and my best friend (not my roommate from before) were doing ounces of k with our crew and IMing.  We ended up going through an absolutely insane amount, and my friend went into psychosis.  Now he's the
most generous, kind, sweet man ever.  But he became convinced that I stole the rest of the liquid ketamine and was hiding it so I could do it all.  His eyes were like.. he wasn't there, stone cold, glassed over, pupils pinpoint and no soul at all.  He demanded to search through my backpack and pockets and since I didn't take it, I was like whatever dude anything you wanna do so you know i didn't take it or I'm just gonna leave - then he said he'd go get a knife if he needed too.  He made me take my pants off to see if I stashed the ounces of k, and then checked my backpack.  Took everything out of my backpack, checked through it like 10 times while chanting "where's the secret pocket man?  I know there's a secret pocket" over and over while I'm like "there's no secret pocket dude, promise ya" and after about 15 minutes of searching an entirely empty backpack, he gave up and I was like damn, that was fucking nuts.  Our friend who owned the apartment we were at came back and helped us mediate it out once we had sobered up.  We eventually found out that we had mixed up our liquid bottles when we were both in the same room and the rest of the ounces of K were just in the bottle in his room on a shelf lol.

That exact same friend had NEVER EVER acted like that, is a total pacifist, and loves me to death and would give his life for mine, and me for him.  It was a pure psychotic break due to massive amounts of Ketamine, a psychedelic dissociative.

The ladder episode with my best friend made me recognize that I was addicted to IMing ketamine and couldn't stop, reaching a pinnacle where he caught me in the bathroom trying to IM a shot.  He ended up then helping me get clean off ketamine too which I had 18 months completely clean from, now I use ketamine at the clinic to help with depression/anxiety only.  Really helped me turn my life around.

Don't they feel "normal" after having used a psychedelic? I thought there was some literature about that

It was clinically studied in the 50s and 60s as a treatment for schizophrenia, apparently with good success in the early days.

Whether or not there is any merit to it, who knows, but it is mentioned in the early literature as having success for the treatment of schizophrenia. It's certainly worth further clinical study, IMO. Especially given the number of people on here with schizophrenia who don't seem negatively affected by it.

As much as I'll humor some of the beliefs about psychedelic drugs and things they can help with.. schizophrenia is a tall order.

I know in this crowd that is going to fall on a lot of deaf ears.

I've had a psychotic break once taking a bit too much canna-oil that I made. Tested it and it felt weak, forgot about it for a month or two, then tried it again thinking it was going to be weak initially.

Not fun at all. Was completely paranoid to the point where I 100% believed my own family members were imposters that were trying to get me, it was legit terrifying.

I don't blame it entirely on cannabis- it was my fault for underestimating but I also was consuming a lot of news at the time, which is what really triggered it. Paranoia + Fear mongering news, not the best combo

I've never experienced anything like that with mushrooms

Is it technically psychosis if someone is tripping absolute balls and get back to normal after a few days sober?

Totally losing touch with reality seems like a danger of a powerful dose of any psychoactive drug but I suppose the real question is how often does it get people into a position where they are stuck in that state while sober days or weeks later?

It might also depend on other things too. Recently I've gotten into cannabis and since I've been taking DMT for a few years I find the cannabis is super psychedelic, and apparently this is a diagnosable mental disorder, HPPD, but I'm not sure how it really counts since it's trips induced by a substance that is deeply psychoactive.
I had a trip that included ego death while mixing cannabis and alcohol the other week and that is apparently also a diagnosable disorder. But it's not like I get zipped off through a DMT tunnel to some other dimension where I'm an ocean wave without being filled with psychoactive drugs.

EDIT: I mean if someone just mentally collapses and has to go through a months or years long process to get back to normal then that seems fair to call psychosis, but "I totally lost touch with reality for the duration of being under the influence of powerful mind altering drugs" seems like a stretch to diagnose as something.

I had a psychotic episode from amphetamines, more than 20 years ago now. But since that time I have used psychdedelics and have never experienced psychosis. Things have got weird a couple of times when I've been overdoing it, but that corrected as soon as I took a break. Never psychosis.

From all the crazy people I have partied with over the years I cannot remember a single one who has truly lost their shit in any meaningful long term way from psychedelics. Horrible overdoses are a thing, it does do weird stuff to people but that normally resolves in a week or two. Consistent use over long periods of time can make people quite strange, but they also normalise quickly when they stop.

The main culprit among all the people I know of is methamphetamine, that is what has driven most of the psychotic breaks, followed by cocaine.

I honesty believe you need a predisposition to have any lasting negative effects from psychedelics.

I think in a sense that is true, although IME there is a big difference between simply tripping (good or bad trip) and a psychotic break.

Even a non-psychotic nervous breakdown is probably very similar to a psychotic break only the breakdown itself a result more of things that are actually happening rather than any hallucinatory stuff. So if you combine a terrible mindset/situation with a full on psychedelic dose people in a bad situation, or mental state, really are at a much greater risk of breaking down.

Imagine taking a huge dose after the loss of a beloved relative, or a divorce or something.
Can probably happen to anyone (perhaps not psychopathic personalities) if the circumstances are right as it's just a matter of pressure I think.

Mushrooms and Aya have scared me at times but generally speaking they looked after me. Cannabis is the one I have to be careful with!

IMO Stay away from cannabis. I've been in a pretty bad place this september. What i believe from microdosing cannabis tincture for a couple months and doing rue/mushrooms/cannabis combo a few times.
Now I'm back to pure mushrooms, microdosing everyday and macrodosing every week. Every trip I get intensive healing. No more anxiety and voices telling me what to do. )
I'm great.

What you people mean with "psychosis" in this thread is either a psychotic episode which feels bad and maybe even was harmful or a psychotic episode following a trip. For the sake of communication it would make sense to differentiate that. A trip itself is a proper psychotic break - always.

Yeah but although you can take a definition of both psychosis and the effects of psychedelics and appear to match and line them up perfectly in list form, the actual experiences are honestly very distinct.

If psychosis were to hit me now it would not be anything like an LSD, Aya, or mushroom trip.

During my first psychotic break I actually clean forgot I was tripping for example, and the most salient feature of psychosis for me would be auditory hallucinations/delusions. I think I only ever experienced a delusion once or twice with Anahuasca and the delusions were not persistent. That is not to say I never went to full on hyperspace (total loss of contact with the room I was in) either. The interesting thing about hyperspace/DMT (in comparison) was actually that a significant portion of myself remained pretty sane and rational!

Psychosis is like switching a light on and suddenly existence is a big sick joke with oneself the punchline and tormented center of the whole universe.

It's like suddenly being world famous in a horrifyingly violating manner (you can just feel/see them) as the vidictive universe gleefully watches you breakdown from front row seats.

What began as a humiliating breakdown for me, soon devolved into a fight for my own life, and I ended up literally crying my eyes out, and begging one of my demons not to kill me!

I glimpsed not only into the abyss that night, but also the heartless evil of someone or some (souless) thing who could witness such a tragedy and still remain unmoved. I could see/hear/feel my parents begging for their beloved childs life and knew that my death would be destroying my own family! Pure evil.

It was hell on earth but real while it was happening. Wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy!

Hey all, just going to generally respond to everything here:

First off, this doc is not about “drugs are bad and make you go crazy”, it’s actually the opposite. But you need to present all sides of an issue.

Drug induced psychosis is most definitely not a myth, ask anyone who’s been through it.  Read "Then I Thought I was a Fish" by Peter Welch.  And there are more than just a handful of reports.  Of these, of course some people have underlying mental illness, maybe all of them, who knows.  But the fact that the trip was a trigger for the psychotic episode (prior to this there was 0 indication of mental illness in their life) would mean that the drug induced psychosis, no?  Am I saying it was the only thing that triggered it? No, almost always there are other factors (lack of sleep, mixing with other drugs, anxiety, etc.)  Would their underlying mental illness (if this is in fact the case) have eventually “come out” another time? Maybe, but maybe not, there’s no way of knowing. I’m just saying I’d like to talk to someone who definitely had no prior diagnosis.

I’m not talking about psychosis as in, you lost touch with reality during your trip.  I’m talking about psychosis long after the drugs have worn off.  Just bc it’s never happened to you doesn’t mean it can’t happen to someone else. Thanks to those who shared their stories and experiences, I’ll be in touch.

It was more that the therapists themselves would take the LSD in order to try and see what it was like to be a schizo in order to better understand the disease and thus how to treat it.

If salvia were included (all one has to do is read trip reports) it would be obvious that many go thru a sort of hell, and many have no idea they took a drug. So it could be called psychosis. Fortunately the trips are brief in real time, although they may not feel that way. In fact it may feel like one can never escape.

Probably the data on datura are similar, and also with some other rather obscure drugs.**

** Re: obscure drugs (aka truly nasty shit) (of course these are not considered psychedelics - but they do show that being an experienced tripper provides no protection from various chemicals and dire mental results) :

Firstly there are those who purposely overdose on benadryl, anti-histamines, and various combinations of these, with DXM, etc. It would seem the artificial induction of 'psychosis', is not that difficult to achieve, if that is what is desired.

Secondly and more strangely:

A temporary one, for sure!

I think most in this thread are referring to potential long-term/permanent effects from certain psychs/dosages of psychs.

I've definitely experienced this and was also diagnosed hppd because of it. I'm 32 now but this happened around 18 years old (I graduated high school in 07) I was hospitalized my senior year of high school. while growing mush I was fascinated with psychs and the research chem wave was on full effect. I remember going to all good festival with a buddy and bought 3 sheets of white on white which we split and both decided to take half hit every day and not tel any one so we could experience the effects without judgement. This was true dedication I mean I'm talking school, family dinners, work, church all completely tripping. On top of the guarantee daily dose of white on white I was also ordering 25nbome,amt doing dmt extractions and showing people what a dab was when only 10% of people had a clue....oh and did I mention beans (x pills) were also an every weekend occurance. I even got arrested with (182 pieces of blotter) which after being tested contained 25i, 25h, and 25cnbome but the analogue law wasn't around yet and these chemicals weren't on the controlled substance list (insane right)
Well the psychosis came when on a Friday I stopped taking anything but was basically paranoid schizophrenic until the following wendsday....thinking garbage men were gonna kidnap me,watching tv and thinking shows were created using my life as a guideline.....insane shit is that I remember it all like it was yesterday  I told my parents I needed to go to the hospital cause I just smoked weed and think I was poisoned (blood tests came back with only tchc in very large ng/ml ,traces of cocaine and ecstacy,) and I was too paranoid to tell the doctors about the lsd until later in life at therapy....But ya I've definitely experienced what doctors have called psychosis due to hallucinogens so message me if u got any questions I'd love to share my story....Lord knows most of my hometown already knows anyway haha

Schizophrenic (among other things) here that took mushrooms for the first time a week ago, despite everyone telling me it would make me permanently insane. I'm fucking fine... The colors were pretty...

A fairly new term we can use to describe tripping, particularly when the user has lost most or all contact with reality or self is hallucinosis. Hallucinosis is classed as it's own "condition" in that it's incredibly short lived (duration of drug's effects much more frequently shorter) and typically responds entirely to deescalation and without medical intervention, though in severe cases anxiolytics may be administered for the safety of the person or their sitter(s).

does hallucinosis include everything that could happen including short lived MPD, possession, sleepwalking, jumping through your living room window...?

some of those experiences feel like psychosis more than hallucination.

A friend of mine used to take lsd, mushrooms, and smoke weed with me all the time and had no problems. Then later on in life he got a prescription for Adderall and would take too much and not sleep for days. He started seeing tornadoes that weren't there and he had a serious psychotic episode where he thought aliens were talking to him from inside his walls. Now he stopped taking all drugs but is still psychotic. He was diagnosed with schizophrenia. Now he can't sleep well because he says demons are torturing him for starting a holy war against the devil. He "figured out" the demons were coming though a portal on the bookshelf due to books and movies of witchcraft. So he burned all his Harry Potter dvds thinking it would help. Then he said demons were causing rashes all over him as revenge. They were really just a little acne on his face. It really sucks because now the friend I used to know is gone. He's not himself anymore.

I have. Back when I was a teenager. Literally had an assassination attempt on my life through drug use. If I didn’t take the substances offered, I would’ve been fine. Being a young, dumb pothead though, I was at a point of exploration in life and would try nearly anything. Needless to say, I did a huge dose of 2CE, and then snorted what I was told was cocaine, only to be told as soon as I I said sniffed it that it was some benzo that was active in the milligram range. I just snorted a huge, coke sized line. Anyway, I went to the hospital, had my stomach pumped, and spent days in ICU. All the while screaming and attacking the staff, absolutely convinced I was already dead. Sad times guys. Be careful out there.

EDIT: psychosis, hallucinosis, whatever you want to call it. I was completely detached from reality in a very bad way. It was a direct result of my absolutely irresponsible drug use.

Hallucinosis would include anything mental or cognitive within the psychedelic experience. For it to be considered psychosis it needs to extend beyond the longest possible duration of the drug's effects.
