Super Freak Sterile Libs??
    #27019275 - 11/03/20 12:13 PM (3 years, 3 months ago)

found these on my hunt today.
found many sterile ones in my time but these take the biscuit!
almost pure white, esp. in field (look bit more orangey in photos). bluing in 3rd pic due to it growing under another. i think gotta be bruising from pressure/contact with its mate? coz sterile don't produce any spores - is that right?

no habitat photos i'm afraid but in peaks, in pasture / typical habitat, by gate, wee flush on own but in known good Libs area (tho was stretching me legs).

done the pencile test so 99.9% sure gotta be super freak sterile libs but worth a confirm/double check i think... still fresh right now but getting laid out to dry tonight

I'm not convinced, no obvious bluing, looks like Mycena.

Albino will lack pigment and has hyaline spore, in other words the spores will be clear lacking any pigment and the fruit will be white.

I agree with Doc, looks more like Mycena to me.

I'm fairly convinced these are Psilocybe semilanceata, if so then probably albino, interesting find.

There's at least a few in there, you won't really see mycenas with those bumpy, knobby stipes

thanks everyone for thoughts / posts

tried to print a few of the larger caps overnight but got nothing that was visible to the naked eye

whilst not conclusive (v small sample and general trickiness printing wee libs), I guess means could have sterile libs which also might be albino

I know where I got them from and likely to try another trip up there this season. I'll see if I there are any more to grab next time out

v pale in comparison to others in me collection

Inski, I appreciate you chiming in because you have way more experience with this species than I do, not to mention that it's just good to see you.

edit: did you try to get a spore print? Should be clear (hyaline) spores

I found something similar once and I called mine sexually conservative rather than sterile. Spores were present and looked normal, but were much much less common than usual.

You can check them out with a microscope to see the spores on the gills, It would be cool if they were. I'm sure one of us would be happy to scope them for you, but I'm far away in the Southern U.S. on the Gulf of Mexico and I think Inski is in Australia. Hit me up if you can't get access to scope or find someone closer. It won't take 5 minutes to see what they look like, I'll be happy to take a look.

thanks RW. v interesting, wish i had more knowledge to fully appreciate the images in thread!

the taxonomy is difficult - i've seen the "normal" sterile/sexually conservative described almost interchangeably as albino before which seemed wrong to me as have general orange-y appearance

these ones appear to be much more deserving of 'albino' moniker
