Oregon decriminalizes all drugs.. all of them. 4

I don't know how this didn't come up here, I saw the legalisation of shrooms. But 4 or 5 days ago drugs stopped being criminal in Oregon. A gram of most drugs from heroin, meth to MDMA means nothing more than a traffic fine or an optional drug support program. It's like they suddenly realised that not every drug user is an addict and needs diversion.
This is a massive step forward. The US led the war on drugs internationally, I'm so happy to be seeing these healthy changes with the US leading away that will lead to so much less suffering. Very positive.
It would be good to see some reintegration programs too, tax incentives for people to hire addicts and the like. One step at a time though.

There are a couple of threads about this actually, but it's always good to have another!
Anyway, LSD is the most exciting one for me personally, but there was already some legislation on LSD in oregon a while back. Either lowering to misdemeanor or civil infraction, I forget, but it predates this current bill so this isn't quite as exciting for me personally. But still a very cool bill and a good step forward! Very exciting, great to see such positive steps forward.
The limit is 40 hits by the way, unfortunately. What an odd number, but there you have it. They could have at least made it a good half sheet, but no, had to be 40 just to be annoying.
I'd consider moving there, but the last thing on earth oregon wants is more people moving there.

I'd not read deep enough into threads to discover the gist that people were talking about this here, I did think it odd.
I'm sure less than 40 tabs is a fine number as a personal stash if you know you can just get more with no recriminations. . It gives me such high hopes for my place. The drug laws have been becoming more and more intense and this trend from our biggest ally is the logical writing on the wall.

Honestly, I have mixed thoughts about this...
I do want drugs to be decriminialized but I still think dangerous drugs such as heroin and meth should be kept illegal in some way. Too many people on the Shroomery have died from heroin or heroin-related deaths. Ive also been to a festival where a guy OD'd on heroin and the festival had to be shut-down because of it. Very sad. Heroin is a terrible, addictive, dangerous drug and there should be some kind of incentive to not use it, in my opinion.
As for Meth, its not as lethal as heroin but it fucks people's lives up really bad. Ive seen it first hand. Its not a pretty sight to see.
Im just afraid with all this decriminalization that meth and heroin addictions are gonna sky-rocket....

The same legislature is also adding new forms of addiction assistance.
I get the origin of your concern..... The other side of that perspective would be, when you take away taboo from something, the urge and fiend without pre-existing addictions becomes less of a thing, as there is no sub-conscious "Im doing a naughty thing".
one 1 hand.... people often prove that if you give them an inch, they want a foot. On the other, we REALLY like feeling naughty, or a little dangerous, and when something doenst feel that way, there's less of a draw towards recreation.

Real world data from other countries that have decriminalised drugs shows that drug use lowers and ex-users integrate back into society better, as they are not criminals. After all, drug users don't give a fuck if it's illegal or not they are still going to do it.
Sure if drugs were legalised across the board and you could buy heroin off the shelf next to aspirin there'd be major cause for concern, but the decriminalizsation model doesn't work like that.
A little read up about how Portugal handled their opioid crisis and their outcomes through rational policy, then seeing how that directly mirrors what psychologists and drug use experts predicted, should put you at ease Logical.
It's not a green light for people to fuck themselves up, it's a harm reduction approach.

Even if they put just 20% of the money they save from arresting and incarcerating people into treating and helping them the paradigm shift will be dramatic. That's 20% more than is in place now. That's even before we get to the societal benefit of having so many more people who can work and contribute, countless people not tarred with the "criminal" brush for doing what is essentially a natural human instinct. People will be free to seek help before they hit crisis level as well, rather than being trapped in a world that clearly doesn't want them being part of it and will lock them up if their dirty secret is found out.

A gram of heroin or coke is not like a gram of weed. I could pack a gram into a volcano(maybe) and in 10-15 minutes have vaped the entire thing away. I will be so high that for 3 hours I be able to do nothing but crawl on the floor, laugh at Jim Carrey and order Dominos.
On the other hand I imagine a 15 year old girl doing coke or heroin for the first time. She knows with no tolerance a little goes a long ways and she could kill herself. But probably not. As long as she just does one small line. Just to try. But how big is a small line? Then a friend of hers gives her a gram.
Ok now obviously this scenario I described of the common teenage overdose is what put prohibition in full swing and outlawed marijuana and alcohol as well. I do not want to be a prohibition supporter. Most likely tax payer money can go a long ways and not all end up costing billions in the legal system.
But I do sort of agree with

A gram of one thing and a gram of another are not the same are they? A gram of LSD is 2000 microdoses of 500 micrograms. Possibly enough to trip forever.
But a gram of heroin is not for a first time user. This is the classic Pulp Fiction scene where Uma Thurman is overdosing and her body is being dragged across someones front lawn to save her because they don't want to take her to the hospital and seem responsible.
But anyway is all this stuff going to be sold recreationally in stores? Or its just not a crime to have a gram of heroin in your pocket anymore? Also, its still a big crime to have a gram of heroin your pocket and have a 15 year old girl in your car right?

I really hope the decriminalization of the drugs helps to remove some of the alluring taboo nature of doing these dangerous drugs.
But if the fine of holding these drugs such as heroin and meth go to rehab programs that people who do heroin and meth want to actually join, I guess its a worthwhile.
Im just afraid use will go up because of decriminalization which could lead to more accidentally overdoses with heroin.
Time will tell I guess

People don't not do drugs because it's illegal, it's not a deterrent at all. Over 1.3 million people in prison in the US can attest to that. The reasons people do or don't do drugs will remain whether they go to prison or not. Decriminalisation does not change anything except reducing the massive harm and cost by imprisoning people.
Addiction is a mental health problem, not a criminal issue. Locking people up does not solve the problem, see above.

I think they should teach harm reduction by teaching proper dosing in centers for rehab and dare I say high school health class (if they still have that).

Dunno if they could give dosing information in the US as it's such a litigious country. Someone will stupidly kill or injure themselves and the rehab centre would become liable for their nativity/stupidity.
Informative education in high school rather than "drugs are bad, m'kay?" so young people can really understand the dangers of these substances goes a very long way. People will make up their own minds no matter what they are told to do, so getting the truth out there is critical. Failed programs like DARE did little more than make drugs an exciting proposition for those who want to rebel against the system.
I really feel strongly about education, I would have suffered much less if I didn't have to find out a lot of shit first hand. The shit they told me in high school was lies or manipulative half truths.

No matter how legal or illegal drugs are, that's not going to affect how many people use them. People don't decide to use drugs or not just because they're illegal. If people want to try heroin, they're going to do it, and if they don't then they won't. If people want to try a drug they're going to do it no matter how legal or illegal it is.
Drug addiction is a medical problem, not a criminal problem. Making it into a criminal problem only makes it worse. It makes the person more likely to continue their addiction rather than less likely. If you throw an addict in jail, they're still addicted. And then they lose their job, and their place to live, and their significant other, and so you've just provided them massive incentive to go out and get high as fuck on their favorite drug. You've made it harder for them to get another job, harder to get back on their feet, and all of that just drives them further into addiction.
Prohibition doesn't work. It encourages addiction rather than treating it. It makes addiction worse and encourages people to use drugs rather than driving them away from drugs. By criminalizing drug users, you provide them more incentive and more reasons to use drugs, and less incentive to get clean.

I meant to give thorough drug info as well as dosing info. I should have elaborated more. You have the right idea about fully educating on the subject.

But most OD's are because of prohibition and the lack of quality control. Decriminalizing really doesn't address that issue, but it's better than nothing. Maybe free test facilities could become a reality now that the criminal justice system is out of the equation.
