66 qt vs 105 qt
    #27029760 - 11/09/20 08:19 AM (3 years, 3 months ago)

I will trying the shoebox method for the first time in a couple of weeks. I have both 105 and 66 qt tubs and am trying to decide which to use. I will have four shoeboxes and they will all fit in the 105 qt at once. If I use the 66 qt, I will have to use two of them.

Are there really any major pros and cons or does it not really matter too much?

This is really just a technicality, but when we speak of shoeboxes we are referring to smaller tubs that are around 16qt sized. Monotubs are usually larger like 56qt and above.

The major issue with using larger tubs is the fact that if you get contamination you will have to toss out the whole thing.
VS
If a smaller tub like a shoebox gets contaminated you are losing much less substrate and spawn.

It is recommended to start smaller if you are a new grower because chances of contams are high. Perfect your sterile skills and then once you are putting out clean spawn and flushes consistently you can move to larger tubs.

As I mentioned, I have four shoeboxes that will fit into one 105 qt tub. They are each 6 qt.

I have had success with BRF cakes and do quite well with sterilization.

I apologize, I somehow missed that part about your 4 separate shoeboxes.

Put them all into one tub. They will take up less space and have a happier microclimate. Less adjustments because only 1 tub.

That was my thought too. It really isn't that much bigger and would be easier to manage.

If there ever was contamination, does it typically jump from one box to the next in the same tub or would I likely notice it in time to remove it?

Don't have experience with that sort of thing so I won't try to answer. Let us know how it goes!

Thanks, will do. I just noticed your signature and that is pretty much what I am doing this time with my cakes except using shoe boxes.
I was wondering what to mix my coir with and now I know  Great job!
