I just got through three months of curfew here in Melbourne Australia. Was 9pm to 5am supposedly to stop unmonitored late night movement and gatherings when we had a 5km travel limit to prevent covid spread. Yes it is a strange feeling to live like that, shit seriously sucked. It makes you feel like a criminal when you haven't actually done anything, thinking that something simple like going to buy late night food or cigarettes could get you a $1400 fine. In the end though it all must've worked because we now have 0 cases in my state...

I don't think so man; RI is not exactly a hot spot for such things.
Some further reading confirmed the fact that it is not actually enforced - the fine print is calling it 'advised' - but I'm sure the emergency alert that came through to every mobile phone registered in RI this morning with the word 'Curfew' on it will be be enough to keep a significant number of people off the streets between 10pm and 5am every night for the foreseeable future.
It's concerning to me inasmuch as it's a prime example of that slow and steady desensitization to further controlling people that COVID has proven such a prime motivator and opportunity for. Just one more subtle erosion of freedom. However at the same time, one cannot argue with this:

I mean I gotta give it to you guys over there, that's mighty fucking impressive in times like this. Proves without a shadow of a doubt that if people would just work together and make a sacrifice for each other, that we really can stop this thing dead in its tracks.
Not that that's possible now in this country, but I sincerely hope you guys manage to eradicate it over there.
Just one more reason why Australia is my home - the place where I will settle and get old and die - because the sense of togetherness people have there is like no other westernized country in the world. Congrats man.

Yeah I don't know where to draw the line, either. Like...as soon as you tell people what the best practice is to eradicate this, at least 25% of them deliberately will do the opposite because fuck you that's why.
I'm all about personal freedoms, but at the same time, I want this shit over with and am getting less and less patient with adults who are acting like cranky toddlers at naptime.

You didn't read my last post. It is 'advised', not enforced, so no fines to worry about.
I don't see how me walking my dog alone at midnight in a deserted location puts anyone at increased risk.
I'm all for doing what needs to be done to lower transmission rates, but stopping people from doing that makes no sense whatsoever.

Your state has lit model itself off my states system the curfew is for bars restaurants and businesses and to stop "ghetto" people from hanging out all night on street corners partying and whatever. if people don't abide by them they will start fining people thousands of dollars each. But thats doesn't mean some mighty mom won't get thier panties in a bunch and call the cops on you for walking ur dog.

I never got the curfew either, if I was trying to social distance going out at night when most people are asleep seems like the best choice

Yes but we limit it to any non essential trips between 10pm and 5am in Connecticut. We also fine people now for not following travel and quarantine protocol because folks wouldn't abide when asked nicely as part their civic duty to protect public health and safety

Well like I say, I think most here will assume it is mandatory and not optional, so I hope we'll be able to avoid it becoming a fineable event.
I'll post an update on this thread when I've had a chance to see what it's like out there at night this week.

Don't misunderstand the situation here though, there is serious economic carnage and lots of people lost work for months, some lost their jobs entirely and there are many small businesses that didn't survive and yes there was about 25% of the population with the "fuck you, mah freedums" attitude. From conspiracy nuts to science deniers to the downright pigheaded selfish ones who simply wouldn't go without a few luxuries in order to save lives, we had it all. I was quite ashamed of the division, hate and ignorance being displayed by my fellow Aussies for a while there.
There were a few poorly organised protests, there were people refusing to wear masks even though it was mandated and enforced with fines, we had several businesses opening in defiance of lockdown and there were campaigns on both social and mainstream media encouraging people to defy the law and deny the necessity of the harsh measures.
Murdoch media really got behind the "Dictator Dan" and Chairman Dan" campaigns here, using Nazi and communist Chinese imagery and slogans to portray our Premier (state leader), Dan Andrews, as a fascist oppressor trying to ruin the economy and lock people inside for no reason. Lots of the social media stuff was actually traced to anonymous bots and fake accounts from overseas too, simply trying to stir up the populace for whatever reason
We were lucky in that we had a state leader who stuck to his plan despite all the slander, lies and even death threats sent to him. He actually had to put his family in witness protection and was under armed escort to and from his daily media conference for the last month or so...
So yeah, it wasn't all the state arm-in-arm working together but we did get there despite the setbacks
