Horse manure is a prized commodity. I've seen farmers fight vigorously to keep secret the locations of their horse manure. The best place I've seen them hide it is in their house. It acts as a awesome rodent repellant and mice won't go near it. It's very valuable in that respect.

Usually if they have a dog it may be very near the dog. There is something about the horse manure that acts as a sedative to the dog and will keep the animal from barking all nite. It will also keep the canine from biting if you approach it. He may growl a bit but you can walk right up to him and slap him in the nose. He won't bite! I guarantee it. The stuff is amazing at calming down dogs.  :smirk:

Another is that they use it to wash their vehicles. The little balls retain soapy water like magic without falling apart. They make great sponges and are just abrasive enough to scrup the love bugs from the front bumper while not harming the coat of wax on the cars.

The farmers also sell them to the local little league teams to use as practice balls. The young ballplayers love the hollow WHOMP sound when the baseball bat plows into a hurled ball of horse manure as much as they love watching the little balls fly apart when hit solidly, exploding like fireworks into dusty fragments.

Other than that, I don't know where you might find piles of manure by the stables. Happy hunting!

Well her ein Oregon and Washington farmers let you takle piles of their compost a t most riding stables.

It is the Cow manure which is sold for fertilizers and gardens.

I have posted images of compost heaps form riding stables int he PNW. Any owner will let you remove the shit/straw compost with stable shaving sand sometimes oyster shells and hickory nuts mixed in.

mj

In all my yers of picking I never heard of a farmer having pride in his compost heaps or stable heaps.
