I don't think I should face it right now. 3

So a while back I joined the fire department. A large part of this job is traffic rescue. Cutting screaming and bleeding adults out of cars has not been a problem to face, but badly injured children has been horror. I haven't had to deal with dead children, yet.
I think if I didn't have kids at home I could deal with it better, but as it is I'm not sure I can. It comes back to me when I'm at home and trying to deal with my people.
Everything will change again soon, but I don't think it's a healthy thing for me to do right now. I know that I am saving these people by doing this job, but the experiences don't easily wash.
I feel like a coward, but I'm obliged to care for my kids first.

Are you thinking about not starting the job, or resigning?
I think that these things often feel a lot worse in anticipation, than realisation.

Nosce te ipsum. Know thyself.
We all do what we can, and knowing ourselves and our limitations (my family is not great at this) allows you to be the one to help, instead of the one who needs help.

Have you talked to anyone about it that can understand what you are going through? It's possible to seek help and cope with it and be able to continue doing your job. I recently, after a very long time, finally had a bad call. It has been eye opening, confusing, and scary. If you don't have anyone to talk to, you can talk to me.

Hey man, if it traumatizes you, leave it to people better prepared to deal with such situations.
Its awesome that you do this, but if it stars bleeding over into your private life, you havent found your professional detachment yet.
I'd be helping out in third world refugee camps if I could hack being around such misery.

Thats a nice thought when a little girl the age of your daughter is writhing in a bloody mess on the road.
Traffic rescue is like a war zone as to the injuries encountered.

that seems totally fair dude, I wouldn't even be brave enough to sign up for that kind of experience. Your kids definitely come first though, if you feel the work will harm your relationship with them

Is traffic rescue just what the rookies need to deal with before moving on to fighting fires? If it's just part of the job maybe going to volenteer reserves for when the next blaze hits the bush you'll be there to fight it which is what you no doubt signed up for.

Theres a high degree of drop out and things like alcoholism in fire fighting for this very reason. No one would fault u for walking away. I'd say talk to some the old heads that have been in the game a while about it then decide.

It has nothing to do with cowardice. Most people are not psychologically equipped to deal with seeing the most grisly injuries on a daily basis.

No we just are of the same opinion.
There are people who feel empathy, are not sociopaths, and can switch off their feelings to deal with situations no matter how gruesome though.

Many surgeons actually are high functioning sociopaths.
