Definately gymnopilus sp. Someone more well versed will help get you to a species.

Thanks! I was pretty sure it was some gym species, it didn't look like any of the Big Laughing Gyms I've seen though, nor did it look (or smell) like Luteus. I know some of them are poisonous, so I wasn't super enthusiastic about just taking a bite to see how bitter it was.

No gymnopilus is technically toxic and its perfectly safe to taste and spit ANY mushroom without risk of poisoning AS LONG AS YOU SPIT IT OUT. Theres alot of weird shit going on with gymnopilus in terms of species and clades. Ill give you a thread weve been having discussions in where Alan Rockefeller has been doing some research.

Fair enough. Just did a spit test. It was mildly bitter, comparable to arugula. Definitely not intensely bitter though, as I've heard gymnopilus "junonius" described.

they tend to grow over time too rather than just fruit and turn bad quickly, so you can check that wood until the conditions turn
bugs also don't seem to like them as much as other types of forest fungi ime, and can almost 'ripen' on the wood, maybe bc they taste like a sponge dipped in battery acid, it's a clever defense, but not always clever enough

This is only true for subspectabilis though, not for luteus; the latter tends to grow in tight clusters, and the moisture in between the clusters causes them to rot.
