Fruiting Conditions vs Spawning Conditions vs Stalling Conditions
    #27023246 - 11/05/20 12:57 PM (3 years, 3 months ago)

I have shoebox of Golden Teacher on WBS spawn put to CVG at about 1:4.  I was looking to put it into fruiting conditions today in a green house, and while searching around I found this thread.  It seems I could have just stuck it in there from the beginning?

Is the current consensus still that spawning conditions might as well be fruiting conditions?

Keep in mind that I have been using a bucket tek style preparation for my CVG so far, so it isn't fully sterilized.  This will be my first cube shoebox in the tent, so if y'all think it's ready, I'm gonna throw it in there and try to dial in the conditions.

I had the same question and as such I'm now trying two (mono)tubs - one having dedicated spawning/fruiting phases with different conditions for each and the other just in traditional fruiting conditions from day 1.

Some of the information posted around here can be a little conflicting and I think the answer that you'll get on a "best practice" will differ depending on who you ask! I think both methods work in their own ways and that's why we have people that vouch for both.

Cool.  Sounds like a good experimental way to find out what works best for you.

I think I'll go ahead and put the shoebox into the tent tomorrow and see how the surface conditions look throughout the day.  Clearly, from the pics, mycelium is breaking through the top of the sub on about 75% of the shoebox, and I'm even seeing little stalks poking out.

As always, thanks for any advice anyone wants to add.  I'm  excited to see how it goes!

I went ahead and cased the shoebox with straight coir and put it into the tent this morning.  Those who are interested in the progress can track it in this journal entry of mine.

I have so far about three shoeboxes that I have done. Noobie here... But all of them I just put the lid on and left them till pins came up and unsnapped the lid. Made a dubtub or put a plastic bag with holes if they grew tall. I just grow them in my closet next to my clothes and shoes. I case right from the beginning even though people say I dont have to. I would rather give it more favorable conditions so I could just forget about them. Photos in sig are from my first ever grow and those are also GT. The 2nd and 3rd flush had some nice decent thick fruit.

Great looking flushes, bro!  I'm also a relative.  I have a guest room closet my wife has graciously donated to my cause.  Still trying to dial in how I can be most efficient at using the space, hence the tent build and the V-TEK Experiment.  We'll see how things go.

I'm not really sure what you mean by "case right from the beginning" though.  At least from my understanding, casing is a specific layer of mostly non-nutritive material added once spawn has colonized a bulk substrate, with the substrate being more nutritive.  That's just what I've gleaned from reading books like The Mushroom Cultivator.  I don't think Stamets (and other experts) would consider a layer of substrate placed on top of grain spawn at the time of putting spawn to sub as technically casing.  I welcome anyone to correct me if I'm wrong about that?

Still, those shoeboxes look awesome!

I guess it wouldn't be called casing. Help me with the word im looking for. I spawn the oats to coir/verm and mix it up, then I add another layer of coir/verm (i thought this is casing) on top of that covering everything up. Thats what I mean by adding a casing from the beginning.

So far I have done it this way (mix spawn and coir, then cover with another layer of coir) with all my shoeboxes even with PE and PEU, and I didn't get any blobs with those PE shoebox.
